My first CS80 :)

My first CS80 :)

2009-12-17 by Matt Thomas

Hello I¹m picking up a CS80 next week, so I figured it was time to stop
browsing the archives and join this group.

My first question where do I put it? :) Are there any good reasons to
favour the original legs over placing it on a desk (or vice versa)? Given
the 80¹s fragile reputation I¹m basically looking for any and all advice on
the subject of removing it from one upstairs location (where narrow doorways
may preclude carrying it flat), to a car, for a drive, and then upstairs to
my studio. Ideally I want to put it down once and then not touch it again so
all advice no matter how mundane will be welcome.

Next question temperature. My studio gets very cold in winter, dropping
below freezing, and quite stuffy in summer. Is this a cause for concern?

Cheers,
Matt

I would put it on it's legs Matt. Also, why not heat the studio in winter? I find it amazing you let the temp drop to below freezing in there..! Putting a CS80 into a car will be tricky, unless it is an estate or station-wagon. I would get a couple of strong helpers and just carry it, with the lid on, very carefully. Try not to subject it to any severe knocks or vibration and you should be fine. Play it before you move it to check it's tuning (let it warm up for 15 mins) and then play it when it's home and see if there is any major difference. It probably could do with an in-situ tune anyway when you finally put it where it will stay.

Good luck and let us know how you get on... oh, and get a heater in there...;^)

Cheerz,
TOM

Heh... this reminds me... when I first purchased my CS80 back in '79, I
brought it home from the music store in the only car I had at the time,
in the back seat of a '72 VW Beetle. I kid you not, and I still don't
know how we accomplished it. But there must have been a strong will to
do it! Of course, that was before I got the matching anvil case for it.
(Then it had to go on the truck with the PA and lights gear).

I have always enjoyed the same luck with both my 84corrola and
89camry....

the back of the back seat will come off with a couple of bolts....

The CS80 slides into the trunk of the 4 door sedans perfectly.....

I always liked the legs because it allows one person (even a small guy
like me) to easily move a CS80 on its casters and then roll it up onto
its stand.

The legs are a must. It was designed to be rolled up using them.. I can't see it any other way..

Re: My first CS80 :)

Thanks for all the feedback, the CS80 is now installed at my studio. I say
Œnow¹, what I really mean is Œsince yesterday¹ but I haven¹t had much time
for the internet in the last 24 hours ;) Managed a reasonably careful move
(despite ice on the pavements incurred a few grey hairs there) and after a
day of acclimatization the synth seems to be in very good shape with only
three issues that need addressing.

1. Dead oscillator on one of the voices of synth II. No waveform output at
all, but the noise source still works and VCA, VCF are functioning as they
should.

2. Tuning is all over the place on synth I and a touch Œhonky-tonk¹ on synth
II

3. Broken pitch ribbon

I¹ve been in touch with Kent Spong about repairing the pitch ribbon (which
can be done by simply posting the ribbon assembly to him for anyone who¹s
interested) so point 3 is in hand.

From reading the archives it seems that point 2 is probably something I
could achieve on my own with lots of patience and a good OSX tuner program
anyone have any recommendations?
And before I go any further - how fiddly/delicate a job is this from the
point of view of someone who doesn¹t do much in the way of synth servicing?
I¹d hate to jump in there and end up damaging the machine in any way.

Which leaves point 1. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Matt

Don¹t panic! :) The broken spring and the tuning were both pre-existing
problems, it¹s only the voice that¹s failed since the move.

Don't be afraid. My feeling is it must be really well done. My CS80
was moved (with me and all my circus) from Europe to Japan in 2003.
Five 5 weeks in the container on the sea, then another 6 years packed
sleeping in the garden house in temperatures between 0 to 40.

Finally a week ago I have found enough time, place and courage to dig
it out of other still packed instruments, stand it, change voltage
selector and fuse and switch it on. Believe me or not - it plays even
better then before, it needs only cleaning, tuning and setting.
Everything works as expected. She is probably happy to be back home
from the 20 years long world journey (as it was before in USA).

You all are making me wish there was a documentary on
the Discovery channel....'Man and his instrument'....(lol)
I wish they didn't drop mine off the truck when it was delivered...
I probably would have hired three strongmen to meet them
and perhaps change its fate when it arrived , as it wasn't working
But the stories of what we've all gone through...good gosh
I would say is PBS worthy for sure!
Happy Holidays to Everyone!!!!

Yes, indeed, even some instruments have their stories and could tell

Great souvenirs isn't it.
When I got mine in '79, I put it on the back seat of my Montego '69.you know the turquoise one with the black vinyl top that i had got for 300.00$ (can). that was one of the best days in my life.

While we´re at it, I bought my CS80 in France back in the year 2000, on a very hot day in September. I managed to heave it into the trunk of my Volkswagen Polo (recently deceased) and drove home from Alsace. That was one of the greatest days in my life, especially because the seller sold it to me and not to one of the hundred other folks who rang him up before I could collect it!

Great souvenirs isn't it.

When I got mine in '79, I put it on the back seat of my Montego '69.you know the turquoise one with the black vinyl top that i had got for 300.00$ (can). that was one of the best days in my life.

Merry Christmas to you all and a great 2010

I have always enjoyed the same luck with both my 84corrola and

89camry....

the back of the back seat will come off with a couple of bolts....

The CS80 slides into the trunk of the 4 door sedans perfectly... ..

Heh... this reminds me... when I first purchased my CS80 back in '79,

I

brought it home from the music store in the only car I had at the

time,

in the back seat of a '72 VW Beetle. I kid you not, and I still don't

know how we accomplished it. But there must have been a strong will to

do it! Of course, that was before I got the matching anvil case for

it.

(Then it had to go on the truck with the PA and lights gear).
