Wow - 5 years!

Wow - 5 years!

2009-08-03 by David Rogoff

Hi all.

I just noticed that a weeks from now will be the 5th anniversary of me starting this group! Hard to believe. Back then, I was thinking of picking up a CS80 to fix up and wanted to get a feel for what was out there in terms of owners and techs.

I did get one (my 3rd over the years) soon after and spent a year or so fixing it up, having a great time, and meeting lots of cool people in this group. I eventually sold my CS80, but I've gotten my fixes since then by doing repairs, tunings, and MIDI installs for other SoCal CS80 owners.

I look forward to another 5 years of CS fun. Maybe someday there will be another synth to match the great beast. Luckily, Yamaha built them like tanks (including the weight), so I don't see any reason a lot of them won't still be working for another 10 years!

Same here.
Lots of TLC, and a CS50 on the side to cannibalize...

BTW, on a totally different subject, a stupid question, people:

Has there ever been a CS80 with the actual name printed somewhere on its surface??

Mine doesn't have it.
Does yours?

I haven't seen any on the 'net that do, either. WTH..?

If this was the rule, then it only adds to the exotic and mysterious air of this beautiful instrument.

I mean, what other analog poly would share this peculiarity..?

Thanx.

The only location are on the model # and serial # plate...

Just Yamaha on the front surface and on the back of the tolex...

I think Yamaha left the biggest CS80 imprint in the sound....

The 50 and 60 were like that, too.
I remember walking into a music shop in Memphis and saw what I later learned was the CS-80. I would have never known or even had a clue until I had to find out what one looked like after UK and Eddie Jobson!
Six years later, I bought Roy Orbison's.

PSU health-replace 4558's? maybe anything else?

2009-08-12 by rj krohn

hey folks, got a question: i was looking at my PSU on my cs80 yesterday, and realized there's 2 4558 opamps. i have had these fail in 2 other yamaha synths, so i was thinking of replacing and socketing them, in the interest of preventative maintenance.

while i have the PSU out, is there anything else in it i should consider replacing? i recapped the PSU when i got it, so those are not of concern.

thanks much. i know it might sound fussy, but its really my main synth now, so id like to keep it as healthy as possible.

Don't socket them as they will fail due to the heat from the power supply. They need to be soldered in only.

wow-thanks kent, never would have known that.(is that a cs80-specific thing, or do you suggest direct soldering any IC in a PSU?)

so can i assume that caps and opamps are the only things vulnerable to age problems in the PSU?
