CS-80 almost working again! (no aftertouch and missing a voice)

CS-80 almost working again! (no aftertouch and missing a voice)

2009-03-30 by Heath Finnie

Thought I would update the list on my CS-80 work thats been going on. I had help in fixing some of these problems which is great since some of them to me were stumpers.

Here is what has been done:

Power supply rebuilt
Ring Modulator envelope fixed (bad IG00159)
Output hi/low switch rebuilt
constant pitch/loss of pitch controls (bad trace on the BA board)
Funky 3 would not sound (bad transistor on the BA board)

Some things that are left to do and a bit of a mystery:

No aftertouch. (The aftertouch worked when I got the synth but now I have none on any key on either channel which makes me think its something global. The voltages seem to be fine on the TKS board....)

No voice 3 on channel 2, but ONLY in panel mode???? This seems like a weird issue...

And last will be a full calibration.

Heath, have a closer check on your TSB boards - that's where my problem regarding aftertouch was...!

Good luck,
TOM

are you sure that every panel function works in either of the memory slots for voice 3? i have seen a particular function of a voice fail(vcf,eg,etc), and it appears as certain presets not functioning.

also, on the aftertouch, when i re-chipped and socketed all the lower boards, i had a bad new CMOS chip on the LARGER board(tks? cant remember name now). it caused the aftertouch to go out completely. all i remember was that it was in the row farthest away from the manual.....

After about 30 minutes it started working. It was weird. It was working in every preset including the memory channels. As soon as I selected panel it would go silent. Press Brass it would come back again.

The thing I wonder about is I had it working when I got it about 4 months ago. I didn't replace any chips and now it doesn't work globally.

if it stopped working at a point that doesnt coincide with you opening the machine up, then "something has failed" would be my first assumption. if your voltages are reading properly on the aftertouch board, that's another vote towards component failure.

also, remember that sustaining a voice and switching thru presets doesnt exercise the envelopes, so the surefire process of elimination is to trigger the faulty voice on numerous presets.

I will probably redo the whole boards. I just wasn't sure if one components failure would kill the aftertouch on every key for VCO, VCF and VCA.

That was also the case. I tried it every way hitting the key over and over, switching presets, back again went to panel and out.

yup- one bad IC was enough for me.

I figured out I was wrong about the voice being out on voice 3. It's a bad square wave on voice 3. Thats why sometimes it was working, I was hearing the saw. Sort of obvious to me now that that is what was happening...

So I have to fix that too ;)

It was a bad waveshaper chip. So now I'm back to having all 8 voices working! Now for that aftertouch and I'm all set.

Even closer now. I have gotten my VCF aftertouch back, but still no VCO aftertouch on either channel and the AT speed has no effect at all either, so I still think it's something fairly major going on.

I'm getting proper waveforms on a scope with the VCF aftertouch, but when I check the same VCO side of TRG3 I just get a voltage spike, no waveform.

Hi , heath .
About the aftertouch problem , It will may sound easy. but have you checked the 8.5v rail supply on the keyboard ? It may have broken from lifting up and down the keyboard --- yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, "Heath Finnie" <heathfinnie@...> wrote:
