Arturia..!?

Arturia..!?

2009-01-18 by Quazimodo

Hi Guys,

I am just on the Arturia CS80 site:

http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/cs-80v/intro.html

...and listening to their supposed audio demo.

Well I must say that these samples sound nothing like either of my
80's... OK, so there are attempts at some complex modulations etc.. but
the overall *character* of sound is, to my ears anyway, nowhere near..

Sounds to me like they could be coming fom any cheap-digital analogue
wannabe..!

This sounds like a good opportunity for a proper AB test.

I'm listening to the demo sounds now - and I'm inclined to agree with your
comment on the cheap wannabe. This sounds thinner than my CS80V, though I
use more signal processing as softsynths generally need beefing up a bit.

As I have the Arturia CS80V, would you, or someone else in the group, like
to compare some patches?

Maybe it'd be easiest if I posted a few patches to be copied on a CS80,
rather than the other way round, as I can take a screen print of the patch
settings and send that as well, so the exact settings can be replicated?
That'd probably be easier than someone listing their patch settings or
photographing their 80.

Or of course if someone has both the CS80 and the Arturia, that would be
better. :D

I know the monoish sequeced ones or the ones that utalize the addon
SYNC do not well represent CS80, but if you could loose the delay on
some of their Mp3s , some of them are very CS80...

Max Fazio has contributed to the CS-80V's sound banks, under the pseudonym omissis. He's done an admirable job of copying the original presets, IMO. For those that have the V, you can get the patches by visiting the download page for the CS-80V.
I supplied audio samples of each preset for Max to use as reference. I think Slammah did as well, eh?

Hey Andrew,

I have an 80V and an 80 and for the fun of it I try to copy patches
from the 80V to the 80 all the time.

Having said that it is not always easy. I agree that the 80V mostly
sounds like a regular VA, however it does have some cool sounds that
do not make use of the additional features of the V and still I can't
get a similiar sound out of the 80. If you want, send me some shots of
your favourite patches and sound clips and I will give it a try.

Cheers
Worsel

Re: [yamahacs80] Arturia..!?

2009-01-18 by Laurie Curry

this is over a year old.....I didnt keep notes....

It is an adaptation of strings.....

I took a patch that existed, tweaked it a bit in the filter by adding
resonance to the HPF, added some speed depth and lfo amount to the
polyAT control...used a hint of speed and amount on the Subosc to
start...there was also a bit of Velocity amount added to VCA...

The brass was one of the Presets I downloaded from users banks off of
the Arturia site...

I forget which preset bank it was in... sorry.....

Thanks. I'll email you privately with some patches for the Arturia. If you
think the results would be of any interest to the group we can bring the
discussion back into the public area.

I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding the Arturia and the synth
it purports to emulate. What you've said seems to be true of their synths
in general - they also create sounds you can't get with the original
hardware synths.

I tend to think of them as synths in the tradition of the ones they're
modelled on, rather than mere copies. I make use of the MiniMoog V even
though I have a Moog Voyager, and I'm pretty sure I'd do the same with the
2600V if I had a `real' 2600. In fact I prefer the Arturia over the more
accurate Timewarp emulation so much that I wonder if I'd be disappointed in
a 2600.

I'm not really that interested in emulating specific synths too accurately,
but I'm still curious about how close you can get. I'm interested to see if
I could refine an Arturia sound closely enough to put someone in doubt about
which sound is the Arturia and which the original CS80. I do think that
would be quite a challenge, though, as I expect the Arturia to be weaker
than the original to a noticeable degree when it comes to straight
emulation.

This brass is one of the brass presets from the User banks...

The strings is a tweaked version of the stock strings....

I am using a SQ80 for polyAT controll ....

and yes... cant wait for the Vax.....

For a reall unique sound.... you should check the Haken Continuum
controller....which now comes with a string preset built in some
how....designed by Ed Eagan....(the first keyboardist in FIST).

That is an amazing controller! Very cool demos. Looks like a lot of fun
to play!

Now where did I leave that extra $5k around here somewhere...?

Unquestionably in the unique department. It can't replace a poly AT
standard keyboard, it's a whole other thing with a good touch for
keyboardists is that the intervals default to the same distances
between fingers. It has some optional clever quantitizing that lets
you still play proper intervals if you aren't that accurate but
instantly goes unquantitized as soon as you play a vibrato or a pitch
sweep. When you rest playing a pitch it can be adjusted to correct it
smoothly and quickly. A landmark unit for alternate tuning because of
the quantitize functions.

Typically you are controlling the amplitude of each voice with
pressure, so it superficially seems to describe something like Poly
AT until you realize you typically are forming the amplitude
"envelope" by finger pressure. Now that's not your only option you
could have a gate with velocity pulled from the pressure but it's a
different sort of feel with big plusses and minuses over standard keys.

The processor inside is robust enough to synthesize and all but early
units have audio outs. It seems to me that Mr. Haken doesn't want to
play up features that are still in development so the site and
literature doesn't really detail much. The doc and OS firmware on the
website is from 2007 for what it's worth, so he's added a fair amount
to the OS since. I presume there will eventually be multiple editable
proprietary softsynths in the OS. Right now they are more or less
demos and user uneditable as far as I know.
