Hi everyone, please have a look at this YouTube vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoEkyBX7qsg <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoEkyBX7qsg> At 49" he reaches beyond the CS to access a string synth and then a choir patch mixed with strings, but plays these via the CS-80's keyboard. Did he have his CS-80 modified to send Midi Out?...Seems that way. Tommy [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

That would certainly be an option if this were a performance video of a track, but this is just V. in his studio hitting some random notes and talking about the sounds and really doesn't seem rehearsed. It's funny, I've watched this one a few times before but never it never hit me that there was something else going on. I think yes, it must be MIDI'd or something like that! There are definitely some non-CS80 sounds coming out when he demonstrates the strings and choir. Good catch, Tommy. -Tim S. Wavecomputer360 wrote:

Is this the video in his studio where he has the EII, CS80, yamaha piano etc? If it is then there is a VP330 out of view above the CS80 that he plays for the string and choir sounds.. sorry if your talking about a different video..

Ever thought of mimicking a performance to a playback ;-) ? I do that all the time, but don´t tell anybody :-). The worst and most blatantly obvious example for this is a certain gentleman from France whose first and third initials are the same ;-)... It is interesting that you stumbled across this. Just a while ago I, too, wondered where the Choir Patch in the vid came from. I don't think this is a playback. Maybe V. can do patches I can't do with my CS80 ? =;-) --- In yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, "Tommy Priakos" <tpriakos@...> wrote:

Looks to me that he is simply playing two keyboards... there must be another synth out of view above the CS80 and he plays that as well..?! Cheers, TOM --- In yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, "Tommy Priakos" <tpriakos@...> wrote:

He's reaching for a Roland VP330 which was placed above the CS80 out of view. j Quazimodo wrote:

By the way, Vangelis among his nine CS80 made some initernal tweaks, though very few ones, for example he stretched the envelope times in the ringmodulator (listen to the track "See you later" from the same titled album); the highest of his modding was in the late seventies where he used to drive external CVs into some semimodular synthesizers (namely, Korg PS-3300) to get insane noises (for example the intro to the track "CHung Kuo" from 1977 "China" album); obviously he's been ever more of a "preset guy" so it was the ingenious Raphael Preston, his engineer at the times, who provided the self built tools for specific tasks. No question in my mind he's got a VP-330 up there. Watching it I think he's just instinctively adding some low end padding with his left hand on the CS. He might know or made a split second decision that that's a better combo than playing the bottom split of the VP or stopping and messing with the VP more. I thought for a second when I read the post subject someone was going to rhetorically bring up that live concert picture of Vangelis. Q: How is Vangelis changing sounds on his CS-80? A: http://www.nemostudios.co.uk/albums/china/concert/c7902.htm (by the way the above is from some mysterious fan site, it's no official Vangelis or Nemo studios which is long gone... and I guess it's more a photo of how he gets around the CS-80 not having a keyboard split) nick

There is no midi here.... he is playing the top synth with the strings/choir with his right hand while setting up the next CS80 sound.....watch it again... he is alternating back and forth...

Oops! Must be a low-speed connection; I could have sworn it looks like he reaches for something with his left hand and then triggers the new sound with his right on the CS-80 keyboard. I'll have to go back and see if his lips are moving in sync with the audio. BTW, do we know if he had the Synthedata Microsine? Thanks, guys, for all the replies. --- On Thu, 1/15/09, Laurie Curry <laurie@...> wrote:

Tommy Synthedata=vapourware; nobody knows or has seen one anywhere And, by the way, Vangelis definitely uses the factory presets almost all the times! ;-) M

A ha!, You're right LC, now I can tell by the wrist action -- he's putting weight down with his right hand (like you said) on the VP330 and playing those keys. Well spotted! The left hand was just playing some bass notes, which I couldn't hear well through my loptop's speakers. Tommy --- On Thu, 1/15/09, Laurie Curry <laurie@...> wrote:

Eddie Jobson's new band UKZ has released their first video "Radiation" from their upcoming EP on YouTube. I didn't see any of the CS-80 on there, but there are a few good shots of him playing his Synclavier. This sounds maybe just a bit King Crimson-esque if I had to pick a similar sound, but they've definitely got their own style. I wonder if he'll still use the CS-80 when they play live (concert scheduled in NYC sometime this year)? They promise some "UK classics" according to the website. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFlnG3AKOW8 -Tim S.

Don't know if Jobson still has his CS-80, anyway some years ago he donated his UK's times CS-80 for a charity auction, and if I remember correctly, he once said that it was easier for him to sample the sounds then tour away with them so he maybe made himself a library then got rid of his oldie... M

Sounds like a crossover between King Crimson and Porcupine Tree. Should be fun to see live, but does not bring anything new to the table. From all I know Mr Jobson das not own a CS80 anymore (but does have an Arturia sticker on his Receptor). --- In yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, Tim Siefkes <timsks@...> wrote:
