stumped - no variation of pitch!!!

This is a big question here. The CS-80 I'm working on will barely change pitch all the way up
the keyboard now. Some keys will play a little lower but not much. Now here are the
symptoms:

I replaced most all the IC's on the sub board. I replaced the entire KAS board with a working
one. Problem does not change.

The pitch ribbon is having no effect on pitch. Neither is the pitch knob.

The channel 2 detune IS working as is the footing sliders.

Ring modulator is working, sub oscillator is working and so is all the waveforms.

Any of the tech guys able to help?

I've had CS80s do this when I've shorted something and blown one of the
DC fuses in the power supply. Are you sure all the supply voltages are
there?

Hi David,

All three fuses are good and all my supply voltages are there. As I said, I know the KAS
board is good because I replaced the entire board after this problem started and its still
there.

I also tried calibrating the KAS board and I'm getting very strange things going on. For
instance on wire TU the calibration says I should be getting 4.v for a reference voltage but
I'm getting almost 13v. None of the VR's are doing anything either.

Your problem is on the BA board by the sounds of it. Pull the TU and
see if the wire has 13ish volt sitting on it.

OK. What you really need to do here then is isolate this fault.



First thing i need to know is if you have replaced any of the 4558
(4158) in the synth.



Next thing to do if lift the 4 pink +8.5 wires to the KAS and the 4
yucky green -6.5 and separate them from each other.

Find the feeds from the psu for both and test. If ok re-attach just
them. Test the remaining 3 wires of each color to see if there is
any standing dc on them. If there is, Leave that one floating and
solder the rest back onto the KAS.



Then find what section of the 80 this wire feeds.

Had the same problem, on my cs80 TR29 was a broken on the BA board,

I'm back at the CS-80 repair. I ended up removing TU from the KAS board but before I was
getting 'nearly' the same pitch across the whole keybed, and the voltage at TU was
13.37v. I removed TU and the pitch totally changed on the keys. I was getting much more
variation of pitch across the keybed, just octave issues. I replaced TU back onto the KAS
board and the pitch stayed pretty much the same as this new way now. Here is a clip of me

The voltage at TU dropped some as well after removing it and the resoldering it. It's now
at 10.37v and VR3 on the BA board has 0 effect on this voltage like it should. I should also
note that the tuning knob and pitch ribbon still have no effect on the pitch. I tried to do
the adjustment of the KAS board and here are the voltages I'm getting:

TU: 10.37v (should be 4v)
Octave Ladder network - should be 125.0mv at Pin 13 on IC2 I'm getting -4.10v
Voltage follower: Pin 6 IC3: Should be 125.0mv, I'm getting 2.55v
Note Ladder Network: Pin 38 IC2: Should be +132.4mv, I'm getting 2.55v

On the BA board I've replaced IC1, 2, 3 and 4. TR29 and both Fets. I highly doubt the
problem is on the KAS board as I replaced it entirely from another one and the problem
was exactly the same.

I noticed that if I took TR29 out completely and fired it up, the pitch problem disappeared.
(disappeared, although the ribbon and tuning pot still have no effect) Granted, it sounds
like crap, but it is a start. I tried 3 different C458 transistors and whenever I put one in, the
pitch problem comes BACK and it will be the same pitch across the keyboard.

It could have nothing to do with your problem, but I once repaired a CS-60
that had a similar sounding problem. The pitch didn't change much at all
across the keyboard. It turned out that one of the power supplies ( I
don't remember if it was the analog or digital supply had lost it's earth
ground reference. So depending on the currents flowing between the digital
and analog systems (like what pitches and octaves were being sounded) the
"loose" power supply just floated around. The failure point was at one of
the big star ground lugs; a thick solid wire had fractured. This problem
would show up when measuring the analog rail relative to the postive digital
rail and seeing if it's not what its supposed to be, and it changes
depending on what notes are sounding.. Good Luck!

According to the adjustment guide, the TU voltage (input to main DAC on
KAS board, driven by O output of BA board / TR29) should be at 4 volts
if the ribbon isn't activated and the pitch knobs are centered. So, if
you happen to have a variable power supply, you could disconnect the
wire from TU and instead drive it from the power supply set to 4 volts.
This should make it play normally, but the ribbon and pitch knobs won't
affect anything. If you don't have a variable supply, then you can just
hook up a simple 5volt regulator to the +15v/gnd and use that.
Everything will be a bit sharp, but otherwise ok.

If this is the case, then the problem is in the BA circuit. Just look on
the big schematic (upper left corner of
http://www.therogoffs.com/cs80/manuals/CS80_Service_Manual/cs80_foldout_schematic.jpg)
to see how the BA works. Just trace the voltage, starting at the
ribbon, through the IC1/IC2 S/H, IC3 and tuning knob, and finally
IC3/TR29 buffer. From you previous description (TU = 13v = IC3 is
driving to its supply rail, tuning knobs have no effect), it sounds like
it's the IC3/TR29 part. However, check the input to it (P1/P2 inputs to
BA board from tuning knob) to see if the voltage looks good there. It
should also be nominally 4 volts and follow the ribbon, VR3, and the
tuning knob. I see you already replaced IC3. Maybe just a bad solder
joint - try touching up all the nearby ones.

Thanks Kyle, I do find it weird though that any combination of TR29 and IC3 being both in
the pitch problem is there and when one of either of them are removed the pitch problem
goes away. It seems that if there was another issue like you mentioned, wouldn't it
probably not be this specific?

I've pretty much replaced everything on the lower half of the BA board. all the diodes,
most all the resistors, IC1, IC2, IC3 and IC4, TR29 and both fets. Somewhere around IC3
and TR29 the pitch goes haywire.

I recently broke a diode while having the BA-board turned upside down
for desoldering the opamps. At that moment, the highest 4 keys all had
the same pitch. I was lucky I could find the bad component because the
broken diode could be seen by eye. In your case I would desolder all
diodes and check them. Good luck.

Is it better to leave CS50,60,80 powered on most of day (say in 8 hour
blocks) to avoid unnecessary stress on when switching on and off
Also how often should the power supply caps be changed----eg every 10
years

A Variac would do more harm then good--components are designed to run
at certain voltages--Component XYZ will say hey I not receiving the
expected volts and start to
stress
Better than a Variac would be a filtered power supply from the mains

I cannot see how it would do any harm. I am not suggesting that you
try *running* the CS80 on, say, half mains volts - just turn her on
and bring the volts up to full slowly.

How can any component *complain* ... ?? The process might only take a
few seconds...
