Yamaha SY-2

2008-10-23 by cuari7

Anybody else have one of these?

I understand it has the same voice components of the GX-1.
I just got one and, boy, is it funky!
it has pressure sensitivity to control different things, including the
filter cut-off.

Interesting beast......

Yes, I have two. I'm currently writing a piece of software to help visualise (and hence learn) the 28 presets.

With two SY-2s, you can make sounds similar to one voice of the polyphonic manuals on the GX-1.

Cool!

Do you know of a mod to be able to do true pitch-bending on it (like
with a pedal or a knob?).

You could change some resistors and adjust the range of the tune knob. Or you could add a control to adjust an offset on the VCO module's vibrato input.

i have one as well. richard, i'd be curious to here where the tap-in point could potentially be for a pitch bend. wouldnt a ribbon controller be awesome on one of these? i'd drop 50 bucks
on one of the cs80 replacement ribbons, if they were available, to put one on mine.-rj

The service manual is here:

http://www.emusic-diy.org/YamahaManuals

CS-60 / CS-80 style pitch bend changes the reference voltage connected to the tune knob, and thus the keyboard bus and the oscillator. If you want a CS-60 / CS-80 style pitch bend (linear pitch bend), adapt the circuit from the CS-60 or CS-80 and apply it to the tune knob in place of +15V (page 7).

The vibrato input on the SY-2 oscillator module is I think an exponential FM input (page 8). In the SY-2 it's driven by the vibrato controls and also by the initial pitch bend function. Adding a variable control here would allow the more conventional exponential pitch bend as known from synthesizers with exponential oscillators.

What about a mod to achieve LFO-controlled PWM?
Any ideas?

Re: [yamahacs80] Re: Yamaha SY-2

There's already a PWM LFO. It's only enabled on the Double and Reed presets. The rate and depth are preset, but you could add in controls for these if you wanted.

ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

The volatile stock market is hurting me.
Unexpectedly, I find myself in need to part with some of my babies.

I will NEVER sell my CS80, but I think I could part with the SY2.
It is in pretty darn-good shape for its age. Fully functional. Comes
with legs and even the music stand thingie. Want $500 plus s/h.
Only USA.

Contact me at diazDOTjesusATmayoDOTedu

Gracias!

For reference, I bought my first SY-2 for £51 (English pounds) and my second for £122. Both from ebay.

i second that-i paid 175 USD for mine about 9 months ago. granted, i think they are worth 200-300, but just a heads up, you might have a hard time getting 500 for it.
