Complete service manual?

Complete service manual?

2008-01-11 by JH.

Hi,

I thought I had the complete CS-80 service manual, but apparently not.

What I have is the big schemo, the tuning instructions, and the first 13
pages of the service manual from this site:
http://bermuda.ucd.ie/bridge/cs80.html

Is there anything else (more parts; possibly the whole service manual)
online?

I have the CS-50 and CS-60 (in paper form), but I just noticed how much the
CS-80 differs from these.

Thanks for any hints,

JH.

Re: [yamahacs80] Complete service manual?

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this. Life's been pretty busy
with work, refinancing my house, and being sick as a dog the last few days.

Anyway, I've posted before about wanting to put up a full, online
service manual. I don't have original manual, just a horrible
photo-copy. Tom and I have been working, very slowly, on an
international effort to fix this. He's been scanning the document in
pieces and I've been patching it back together. The big pain is that
the pages of the manual are too big to be scanned in one piece on most
scanners.

I promise to put up what we've done so far very soon. If anyone has a
copy of the original manual and a large format scanner, it would be
fantastic. I can dream...

Sorry to hear you've been unwell David.

I sent you an email (about my CS) - probably why you didn't reply yet...!?

Also just to remind you ... please could you let me know exactly which
pages of the manual I have already scanned for you. I didn't really
keep a good record, would rather scan *new* pages, that send you one's
you already got.

Cheers,
TOM

Hi Tom.

I'm finally catching up on CS80 stuff. I thought I'd get the manual up
to date so I can help debug your other problem. Here's what I put
together, which includes all the files you've sent me:
http://www.therogoffs.com/cs80/

Piecing together multiple scans is a major pain, but I got them usable,
if not perfect. I'll get back to your keyboard's problem this evening.

Well, I thought I had emailed that to Tom, not the group, but I was
planning on telling the group anyway.

Please check out www.therogoffs.com/cs80 and let me know what you think.

Wonderful!

I just downloaded it and taken a brief glance before going off to work.
It's the first time I see these TBS boards with components in black and
copper traces in light grey - wonderful!
Thanks a lot for doing this!

Update:

It's still in flux, but I've updated www.therogoffs.com/cs80 a bit.
I've added a complete CS60 (minus the huge fold-out diagrams - still
working on those) service manual. I just got it on eBay and scanned
it yesterday.

Complete CS80 Service manual online soon!

2008-10-01 by David Rogoff

Hi all.

I finally got hold of an original Yamaha service manual and will be
scanning it and putting it on my site (http://therogoffs.com/cs80 ).

To whet everyone's appetites, I've already updated the scans of the
big, foldout schematic and block diagram. They are here:
http://therogoffs.com/cs80/manuals/CS80_Service_Manual. Yep, after
years of using the invaluable, but black-and-white scans online (done
by Crow or Kevin Lightner - don't remember which), you can now get it
in its full color (ok, two color) glory.

I'll be cleaning up the scan a bit soon, but it's pretty good now.

Enjoy,

David

Hi David, What are the dimensions for the new two-color block diagram?. Just trying to print out a copy that jives with the original. It's funny, I don't remember these two-color charts in my Service Manual. I'll have to check it out.

Tommy,

the original is about 20" x 40". If you look at the image properties
you will see the size and DPI are correct, so if you have it printed at
actual size it should be correct.

I forgot it was color, too since I had been used to the online scan for
so long. When I had a copy printed out at Kinkos a few years ago, I did
it 36" wide, so it's actually much larger than the real one! Makes
great wall art :^)

Done (well, mostly...)!!!! - Re: Complete CS80 Service manual online soon!

2008-10-05 by David Rogoff

I scanned the whole manual and put it up at
http://therogoffs.com/cs80/manuals/CS80_Service_Manual. A few pages
didn't scan right (5, 30-39), but I'll fix them soon.

Everything, including the big foldouts, is scanned in color at 300DPI.
I didn't edit or retouch anything. Depending on your needs, you might
want to sharpen the images or reduce the gamma for better contrast.

I hope these will be helpful to many people and can even be a way to
mark-up repairs, adjustments, and modifications that can be shared.

So I now have complete manuals for the CS80, CS60, CS50, and CS70m on
my site. And, I've got another going up this week. I'll let people
guess what it will be.

Enjoy,

David

Don´t take it for granted but I think the Yamaha CP-30 electric piano has keys which look remarkably similar to those of the CS-80. You might want to give this a try.

Can anybody confirm my assumption?

funny, i was gonna suggest this. i have a cp30(sorry, no spare keys) and last time i was under the hood i swore they were the exact same keys as a cs80. probably your best bet would be to just buy one, since they are so cheap anyway.

SY-1 service manual....?

2008-11-02 by Quazimodo

Hi David,

I was wondering if the SY-1 service manual was up on your site yet
please. The link below only shows the front cover of the manual.

I just picked up a CSY-1 organ and would maybe like to have a go at
"extracting" the synth section...

Cheers,

Re: [yamahacs80] SY-1 service manual....?

2008-11-03 by Richard Atkinson

The SY-2 has many more variable parameters than the SY-1. It's almost the complete GX-1 VCO LPF HPF VCA voice structure, with just a few things determined by the preset only.

The waveform (sawtooth or pulse), VCF modulation, PW modulation and octave (high or low) are determined by signals connected to the 14 voice switches. These could be replaced with simple on/off switches.

Of all the other parameters, only three are preset and not adjustable using the variable controls: filter envelope initial level and release (using CS-50/60/80 terminology) and filter envelope polarity. Controls for everything else are provided, with a system for bringing groups of them in or out of operation.

Re: [yamahacs80] SY-1 service manual....?

2008-11-04 by Richard Atkinson

I thought I'd follow up my last post with a list of the variable parameters on the SY-2 and SY-1.

Since I've never seen or used an SY-1, nor seen the service manual, some of the explanations on the SY-1 are guesses based upon my knowledge of the SY-2 terminology. Yamaha used strange names for some of the parameters on their early synthesizers, as did Korg. However the actual synthesizer structure behind the strangely named controls is a lot more conventional than on the early Korgs.

If anyone has an SY-1, please could they check my guesses of the parameter functions.

SY-2

Pitch bend: on/off - an initial upward sweep in VCO pitch to the desired note

Portamento: on/off, short/long control

Tone Bend: preset/variable, attack time, intensity, decay time - these are three of the five Yamaha VCF envelope parameters, with intensity corresponding to attack level

Pulse Width: preset/variable, pulse width control

Vibrato: preset/variable, speed and depth controls - the vibrato LFO also controls VCF LFO modulation on the FUNNY and WAH GUITAR preset sounds

Envelope: preset/variable, attack time, decay time, sustain level, release time - VCA envelope

Filter: preset/variable, LPF cutoff, LPF resonance, HPF cutoff, HPF resonance

In addition to the above there are also controls for tuning, volume, aftertouch sensitivity and foot pedal sensitivity. Aftertouch may be routed to VCO LFO modulation and/or VCF and/or VCA modulation. Foot pedal may be routed to VCF and/or VCA modulation.

Waveform, VCF LFO modulation depth, pulse width modulation speed and depth, filter envelope initial level, release time and polarity are all determined by the choice of preset sound.

The octave selection system is a little strange. There are four footage controls but five actual footages available. On some preset sounds the four controls correspond to 16', 8', 4', 2' and on other preset sounds the controls correspond to 32', 16', 8', 4'.

SY-1

Attack bend pitch: on/off - I think this corresponds to Pitch bend on the SY-2

Attack bend tone: on/off, intensity, time - I think these are attack time and attack level of the Yamaha VCF envelope, initial level, decay time and release time are always preset

Portamento: on/off, short/long control

Pulse width: preset/variable, pulse width control

Vibrato: preset/variable, speed and depth controls - also VCF LFO modulation on certain preset sounds?

Envelope: preset/variable, attack and sustain controls - no decay or release controls

Filter: preset/variable, cutoff and resonance controls - at a guess these are controls for the LPF, with the HPF always preset

In addition to the above there are also controls for tuning, volume, aftertouch sensitivity and two foot pedal sensitivity controls. Aftertouch may be routed to VCO LFO modulation and/or VCF and/or VCA modulation. There are separate controls on the back of the machine for foot pedal VCF modulation and VCA modulation.

Other aspects seem to be as per the SY-2.

FYI - just looked on eBay and found several CSY-1 service manuals for
sale!!!

Also, can someone explain the differences between the SY1 and the SY2,
other than the case.

Complete: Re: SY-1 service manual....?

2008-11-28 by David Rogoff

During breaks from eating lots of turkey and pie, I finished putting
up the SY-1 manual. The direct link is here:
http://www.therogoffs.com/cs80/manuals/SY1_Service_Manual

It was very confusing: It's basically 2 1/2 manuals for the different
serial number revisions.

Anyone have an SY-2 service manual I could borrow to scan? Or an SY-2
I could borrow to play :^)

Back to more pie now...

David

Great , David, it's a lot interesting for those solutions applied later on the CS-X0
