CS80 Leg Bracket Hardware & Expression pedal?

CS80 Leg Bracket Hardware & Expression pedal?

2007-12-20 by Rick

HI guys

I just rescued a CS80 from a local basement.

looks good.. was purchased in the late 70s and put in storage in
1982.. tolex is a little worn otherwise it looks and sounds great.

I got the legs and the manual, brochure as well as the sustain pedal..
no expression pedal, music stand or leg hardware.

anyone have any details on CS80 Expression Pedal - subs or other
models which used it?

also can someone remove and snap a pic of one of the mounting screws
(the ones that attach the CS to the legs) I would like to hunt down a
close replacement.

considering MIDI for this sucker.

thanks

Hi all,
If anyone is willing to assembly an expression pedal, I could try to make a diagram of my original.
I don't know how hard is to modify an standard expression unit to make it compatible with the CS80.
As far as I remember, it uses lamp(s) and photo cell(s)...
Let me know.
Gustavo.

its really in great shape.. the tolex is a little worn but its
beautiful inside and the panel is pretty much perfect. When I got it
in for service i don't believe it had ever been opened before. I
changed the supply filtercaps and cleaned out the dust inside.

The original Owner bought it in 1979 or 80 and played it briefly
before stashing it in his basement in the early 80's.. its been in
storage since. He was telling me how it took years to pay off and he
wasn't even using it. It was brought in for a check out last summer
because he intened to sell to fund another keyboard purchase.

I made him an offer and it took 4 months for him to get back to me but
he finally realized shipping to Europe was going to be a pain so he
let it go to me for my best offer so that it would stay in the city
and he could play it if he felt the urge.

I forgot how large it actually is in the 4 months I didn't see it..
we've had a few CS50s come through so I guess thats what my brain was
thinking.. I told my friends they aren't allowed to use it
unless/until they help me move it at least once.

I'll snap some pics later.

oh and I paid alot for it.. but no shipping or repairs so....

yes, that would be great, gustavo. thanks alot-any leads you could provide(or a diagram would be awesome) would be hugely helpful. i have yet to find anyone who is using a current market expression pedal on a cs-80, so at this point, your lead is my best one! thanks.

Re: CS80 Expression pedal?

2007-12-20 by David Rogoff

From what I've read, the old expression pedal was the FC-3a, which was
also used for other synths, like the GS1/2, DX-7, etc. The pedal input
a voltage on the sleeve (-15v in the CS80) and output a voltage on the
tip of the plug. It did this with a light bulb / shutter / photocell,
but there's nothing magic about this. What's kind of weird is that this
voltage is buffered and used to drive an LED light, which controls the
signal feeding the main volume knob (all on the PRA board). I don't know
why the used an LED / photocell as a VCA when there are a billion
IG00151 VCA chips all over the rest of the keyboard.

Anyway, Yamaha now sells the FC-7 pedal. It just uses a potentiometer
(probably with a weird taper to match the old response) instead of a
light/shutter/photocell. However, the Yamaha manual (
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pdf/man/m_151552.pdf) says it's
compatible with the old FC-3a.

david, thanks alot. ordering a $40 pedal is much easier than building one!

I use that Pedal without any problems on my CS80. But I think its silly that the Wah adjusts the volume as well on the CS80, so I don't even use it anymore.

Sorry, just to confirm..

Did the original CS80 pedal also adjust volume and Wah at the same time? Anyone?

Does anyone who owns the original pedal use it much? Before I rush off to buy an FC-7.

Depends which switch you had thrown I think..!?

Exp = Volume.
Exp/Wah = Volume/Wah

Cheers and "Happy New Year" to all...
