OT: gear sold, regrets or not

OT: gear sold, regrets or not

2007-11-21 by billwolfer

I was just thinking about all of the stuff I've sold over the years,
because I responded to Tom's post that I might regret selling the
CS80. He has a point, and you can bet that I won't sell it without
much consideration, because right now, I am not hurting for money, and
my gear lust is very low, having just completed a round of turning
over old for new. But here's a list of everything (at least synth
related) I've sold over the years, regrets or no, as well as I can
remember. How about you guys?

Farfisa Combo Organ (my god, that would would be worth something
today, wouldn't it? Dave Clark Five!

Hammond M3 with Leslie 122 (too bloody heavy and awkward to move.)

Rhodes Stage 73 (don't remember why--bought another to replace it.)

Hohner Clavinet D6 (lost to a pawn shop, oh, the humanity. Miss it to
this day.)

Moog Source (nice synth, but I have my minimoog.)

Moog Micromoog (was dead after 20 years in storage. Still went for
$510 on eBay.)

Moog Memorymoog (early version--pain in the ass, and unreliable. only
regret is that today I'd get much more.)

Oberheim Xpander (can't remember why I sold it. Just wasn't using it
that much, but what a great synth. It's the one I miss.)

Yamaha CS01 (I don't remember if I sold it or lost it, but it made
some funky sounds for a little bitty thing. Used it on some recordings.)

Yamaha DX7 (got my money's worth from it--don't intend to use it again.)

Yamaha TX816 (a truly powerful beast; I do miss it a bit, but not
enough for serious regrets. Got some killer bass sounds using three of
the modules in tandem.)

Emu Emulator I (got it in 1981 and used it for all it was worth. got
burned out on sampling, and still am after all of this time.
manipulating samples is like trying to make a puppet made out of dead
meat look alive.)

Linn LM1 (great drum machine, a classic. It's in good hands now, fully
restored, but I had no use for it, I got my money's worth.)

How about you guys? Now that vintage synths are going for crazy
amounts, what did you sell that you regret? Or don't regret? I still
covet an ARP 2600, but the last one on eBay went for $10,000+. no no no.

Re: [yamahacs80] OT: gear sold, regrets or not

2007-11-21 by OH

well,
i have always struggled to take the decision to sell stuff
that i had been lusting for for a long time but i have never regretted it.
most notably, i have sold a
PS3300: its got its caracter but is overrated and i bought a LAMM and an xpander
for the proceeeds,
a MKS80+MPG,
a MW1,
the xpander
and an ATC-1
a DRM1 (i never did anything with this one)

basically, i have been narrowing down for a couple of years and hope that i will eventually
end up with 2-3 large polys. i think the ideal number for me is 2.
people who spend more time with their instruments might want more but to me there is always a point
when having too much gear keeps you from actually making music.

so, some time ago, i came to the conclusion that less is more if you got the right instruments.

Re: [yamahacs80] OT: gear sold, regrets or not

2007-11-21 by Wavecomputer360

I understand your point, but still I´d be very reluctant about selling something without a pressing need. I had to sell some stuff in the past which I really, really regret now but life forced me to do so... after all, owning an RMI KC-2 Keyboard Computer or a rare PPG 1020 is one thing, paying the rent is another. This is one of those unavoidable things... the only choice is owning rare keyboards, or being homeless instead. What does matter more to you?

I would, by today´s standards, not sell anything unless it a) is just occupying dead space, b) tends to be prone to disaster (and you´re not willing to spend a year´s income on getting stuff fixed), c) can easily be replaced (a TR-808... well, it would hurt, but a Linn LM-1... no way!), or d) you just don´t like having it around as a musical instrument. If that´s the case, sell it and replace it with something you might enjoy more. If there´s no urge to sell something... think it over! I for one would never part with my CS80, I´d rather give it to a friend if I found myself in bad circumstances, just to make sure it doesn´t get harmed (same thing goes for my Mini Moog, ARP 2600, PPG 360). I´d rather have it fixed anytime it breaks... after all, owning something is not only the mere process of actually *having* it, you´re also responsible for what you´ve got.

Just my two cents. Ah, and don´t forget... when you sell a CS80, your back will ache again. Which might be a lot worse than just your heart... :-)

First Bill, let me say thanks for all the great music you've been
involved with over the years. I've been reading your name in credits
for a long, long time and scrutinizing the keyboard/synth parts to
glean your secrets;^) I worked for CBS Records back in the day
(sales/promotion) and have a Thriller Platinum LP w/4 gold singles
award hanging in my studio. Nice to put a virtual face to your name.

Most of what I've had to part with over the years were either being
unused or had fallen into disrepair or got stolen. It's always hard to
let go of gear, but my kit has evolved to a good place with a
MiniMoog, CS-50, and Roland SH-3a as my three 1974 synths in the
collection.

If they were working, the only things I would like to have back:

ARP Odyssey Mk II
PAiA 2700 series (my first synth I built from a kit)
Roland MKS-70/JX-10 (just for the Soundtrack patch)
Roland SVC-350 vocorder and Paraphonic 505
Roland Space Echo 201

My Gear regrets:

My original CS-60, my first synthesizer!
A Moog Prodigy I bought from another film composer for $75
A nice little Roland JX3p, which I traded up for a JX8P
The above mentioned JX8P
My Mutron BiPhase

He, he.....

Nice thread.

my biggest regret has been selling a massive MOTM modular system AND a
Serge Animal.

I would NEVER sell my CS80. PERIOD.
When I die it will be buried with me.

My CS60, I will leave to my widow.

I hate to be callous, but I'm sure there are those on the list who would
prefer that you have the decency to gut the unit, sell the spare parts
to other list members, then get buried *in* the case. Isn't that the
decent thing to do? Kind of like being an organ donor... (I'm truly
sorry for the pun...I need a nap).

Hmm. Brings new meaning to "it's really the person making the music rather
than just the instrument itself." Nice end to the analogy by being buried
as the literal guts of the machine.

I regret still to this day selling my CS80.

It was bought be a guy who haggeled over the price with me for an
hour.

The price was £175

I can still see the Volvo estate speeding away down my road with the
beast in the back.

I know this may be off topic,

but I recently got back some of the sounds that I had lost loosing my
Arp Axxe and my Roland JX3P.... No. It isn't analog either.....but
the Creamware Prodyssey (now made by SonicCore)

gave me back all my JX sounds that didn't use the inverted envelope,
and a fatter Axxe sound with the Odyssey set up....

Here is a link to a picture of one, someone took the time to add a
keyboard to and replace the black caps with colour tips....

Re: OT: gear sold, regrets or not

2007-11-22 by Quazimodo

I very nearly got as good a deal back in '86 when I bought my first
CS-80. I paid £250 for it and it's still going strong. Lately I bought
my second one for £1350 - with issues, now all fixed (I believe.)

Just tuned her up yesterday. I'm hoping to install those de-coupling
caps on the TKC board in both my 80's and also change the Power Supply
caps in the very near future. I noticed that in David's photo here in
the folder on this site, there are around 10 small blue ones (look
like polarised caps to me) -which ones are those? I have bought all my
electrolytics already, there are just the non-polarised 0.1mfd and 4
others: 0.001 and a 0.022 (around IC 721) and two more only marked as
'K' (around IC 722)

Has anyone any idea about those?

Sorry this has turned into a long question -

Gear I have sold:

Fender Rhodes Stage 73.
Crumar Performer.
Moog Polymoog Synth.

I was thinking of selling my Clavinet D6, but reading posts here
recently (and also advising others NOT to sell) I am having second
thoughts.

Cheers,
TOM

Another one I regretted selling for awhile there was my Microwave
XT.................until I got my Waldorf Q+ (last week).

I've gotta say, this is one AWESOME synthesizer.

Highly recommended, folks..
