Yamaha CS80

I'm sorry guy's. I thought I already posted this message before.

I have a batch of brand new ribbon controller springs that me and
RLMusic had specially made that I fit into all the KSR80 Level 3's.
They are not cheap I'm afraid as the manufacturing costs was really
high.
They work out at about £40 each.

Kent, in my browser that came out as ?40. Are we talking pounds,
dollars or euros? Can you ship to the states? How hard are they to put
into place? Do they still have the same functionality in that you can
start anywhere on the ribbon, moving left is exponential, right is
linear? lots of questions. one more: how are you fixed for oscillator
chips?

As for VCO's

Yamaha Japan are listening at last. I am putting together a list of
people who want to buy full sets of the final rock steady issue
IG00153. Once I get enough people signed up they will do a run of
them. I got Yamaha UK as go between, but I need more guy's on the
list.

kent, thanks for this. i am also looking for one VCO and one VCF chip. do you know how much we are talking per chip on the Yamaha re-run? if it is reasonable, i would buy a set as spares.

also, what about spares on the VCF and VCA chips? thanks.

That's great news Kent. And we really do need to know how much they
will be - I'm sure you'll get more people on the list - world wide -
if they have an idea how much ££'s they'll need to commit.

If we have success with a VCO run then it will be alot easier to get
Yamaha to do VCF's and so on.

As for price,

They won't say. But the question is this:

What is a reasonable price for a VCO. How much do you think it would
cost right now to get hold of just one 153. There are guy's in the
UK now who are buying CS5's for £200 ( $400 ) just to get the one
VCO out of it to put in their CS80. I could be just wasting my time
here, trying to get this done. But one thing is for sure, a CS80
with a voice out is a 200lb door stop. This is why I am trying to
get some big names on the list who may want more than one set. The
other problem is that analouge costs more in the EU than the US most
of the time. So there is that to compeat with too.

As for me,

I am down to my last few 153's and I still have 16 CS80's to get
done. :(

i would also buy 1-5 depending on price. if we were talking $25, i would buy 10. if we were talking $50, i would buy 1-5. same with VCF/VCA.

Kent, does Yamaha really still have the facilities to make IG chips? These
were made on very, very old machines using very old fashioned process
techniques.

Possibly they have a stock of unbonded dies / wafers they simply need to
package up.

OK Kent. If you need to reach a minimum order quantity, my company

But lets be sensible about this please. $25 for a 153, yeah good
luck finding that buddy. You can't get a CEM3340 for that these days.

The point here is not how much they are going to cost. The point is
that Yamaha make them or at the very least sell the die to someone
who will and that's all. I am not taking orders or make a profit out
of it, I am simply trying to build a voice loud enough that Yamaha
will take full notice of. I truly care deeply about the CS80, it is
the best synth ever made. I want these lush monsters to continue to
be a force in music for as long as possible. Yamaha are talking bums
on seats as you would expect, after all they are a business. Hence
they want to know how many ic's they need to make for it to be worth
their while. I'm just a synth tech trying to get something done
about it.

I've had experience with Yamaha in the past when trying to obtain some of
their YM2413 low cost FM synthesis chips. Back then I wasn't in a position
to order from them in the quantity required, which is probably a good thing
because in the end I found it easy to source YM2413 chips in
already-finished devices and I would have been stuck with hundreds of nasty
FM chips!

But IG series chips are another matter, and CS-5s deserve not to be
sacrificed in order to rescue CS-80s! (In fact, what about making it a 7
voice CS-80?)

Anyway, do you have an idea what their minimum order quantity / amount
would be? Would it need to be all the same chip or could the numbers be
made up using a mix of different IG series chips?

I can't (unfortunately) see them going for under US$100 each - possibly
more. You end up with a really bad suppy/demand equation. If you want
to redo the whole set, to get a stable, reliable CS80, you're talking
close to US$2k for the job. I can't see there being more than 25, or
so, pros willing to shell out that kind of money, so that's only 400
parts. On the other hand, if they're just used to replace the
occasional dead chip, it's a much smaller quantity, so they'd be even
more expensive.

Kent - I wish you lots of luck on this, but I don't see how it could be
done at any cost that makes sense. Please prove me wrong!

And may I add, that the odd $100.00 isn't much to spend for an out of
production chip....if it is guaranteed to work....

15 years ago I spent close to $40.00 each x 16 of them... only 14 of
the 16 worked, and when I asked for 2 more, the supplier couldnt
get them.... all I got was $80 cash back and a 7/8ths modified
CS80......I left the older chips on M boards 8 and 16.........

hey kent, thanks for this. i wasnt EXPECTING the chips to go that low, i was merely throwing some numbers on the table, as it looked like you needed some concrete commitment from members of the group. whatever they shake out to be, i absolutely need 1 VCO and 1VCF, minimum. frankly speaking, the higher they end up being, the less spares i will buy.(of course i know that you are not in control of how much they will be!)

also, thanks so much for your participation here, and for trailblazing the new chip discussions with yamaha!!! they are truly awesome-i totally agree, the CS80 is the best synthesizer ever created.

But lets be sensible about this please. $25 for a 153, yeah good
luck finding that buddy. You can't get a CEM3340 for that these days.

The point here is not how much they are going to cost. The point is
that Yamaha make them or at the very least sell the die to someone
who will and that's all. I am not taking orders or make a profit out
of it, I am simply trying to build a voice loud enough that Yamaha
will take full notice of. I truly care deeply about the CS80, it is
the best synth ever made. I want these lush monsters to continue to
be a force in music for as long as possible. Yamaha are talking bums
on seats as you would expect, after all they are a business. Hence
they want to know how many ic's they need to make for it to be worth
their while. I'm just a synth tech trying to get something done
about it.
