While I'm waiting for shipment of my CS-80, I've been looking around on the web and found this: http://www.vangelismovements.com/PolydorBoxPage07B.jpg Does this mean the hunt isn't over yet?! :) I also wonder, what kind of keyboard stand holds the _upper_ one ... JH.

The CS80's key feel is from weights at the back of the keys. If you tilt it like that, it wouldn't feel or bounce back right. I'd also be worried about the thing falling over. Ouch! David

I have a CS-80 (#1480) that hasn't been powered on in years. I am afraid what might happen if I just flip the mains switch. Are there any recommendations on what's the best method to bring one back up that's been off for so long? I thought I might try and use a variac. Let me know please. cheers, [w] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

get it up to room temp for a day or two, if your a techy why not replace the smoothing caps in the psu, and then fire the old girl up, you might be surprised to find its all OK? Ill keep everything crossed for you, let us know how you get on! > I have a CS-80 (#1480) that hasn't been powered on in > years. good instincts. changing the psu capacitors is not too hard. youll probably have to order the 5600mfd/40v caps, other values should be at your local store. digikey is quick delivery/processing if youre in the states, might as well get em all there.
its always a smart preventative idea. seems like a waste of time until that one time you power up something, a cap fails, and you wind up burning out something downstream. that's a REAL pain. been there, it blows.

Thanks guys! I am absolutely no stranger at all to the recap operation. I have a lot of gear and have rebuilt several power supplies. Regarding the caps, should I go all out "Computer Grade"? What brands and temp ratings have you all used in your rebuilds? Has anyone ever tried the variac thing with an old synth? I was thinking I could ramp up the voltage over the course of about a day- but I wasn't really certain how the regulators would take to that. I thought you could ramp it up and then hit the reset line on the CPU but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Should the regulators be changed as well? I don't have the service manual to the CS-80. Can anyone tell me what the electrolytic values are? Where is the best place to obtain a copy of this legendary doc? cheers, [w] --- rj krohn <r_j_d_2.phila@...> wrote: > good instincts. changing the psu capacitors is not > too hard. youll probably have to order the > 5600mfd/40v caps, other values should be at your > local store. digikey is quick delivery/processing if > youre in the states, might as well get em all there. > > its always a smart preventative idea. seems like a > waste of time until that one time you power up > something, a cap fails, and you wind up burning out > something downstream. that's a REAL pain. been > there, it blows. > > Wayne Griffin <ingsoc_1979@...> wrote: > I have a CS-80 (#1480) that > hasn't been powered on in > years. Hi Wayne, If you are tech enough, I suggest you that you unplug the output of the power suppy and load it with a dummy (resistors) load. I don't remember the resistors values for each output accordig to the voltage and nominal it should drain. As a general gude think of resistors of low values (less than 50 ohms) and more than 15Watts. If you need a help with this let me know. This way if any voltage output is out of its nominal value, you don'y blow ICs (VCAs, VCFs, VCOs., etc.). I don't suggest you using a variac. I should have some parts of the manual over there, if you don't find it in another place let me know and I will look for them. GEEG.
