killer! i dream of cs-80 ownership...
i am trying to put together a comprehensive sheet of which internal trim pots do what for the synthex. i've got the pitch/mod board, and the voice card now. if you ever come across which trim pots do what on the 4 "motherboards", please drop me a line. thanks.

Anyone in the group live near Austin and could check it out for the rest of us? Price (I don't think I want to know)? It could use a bunch of knobs/sliders, program-change buttons (why are these missing on most new controllers?), and a ribbon. One of these (www.sweetwater.com/store/closeup/ReMOTEslZeRO--Main) on top should get it most of the way there! Or, even better, this: www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/origin/intro.html, running the CS80 emulation. David p.s. - Google Earth says it's a 1400 mile drive and should take 22 hours! Almost 1300 miles is a straight ride on the I-10 - I could actually use my cruise control, which is fairly useless in Southern California.

A dream came true, Scott, and, even if you won't find a proper ribbon on it whenever VAX77 will be released, there's a ready-to go yet: www.sknote.it/hardware.htm , look for the "Bow" , it isn't mentioned but it has also zero relative logic, and the price is almost a steal (around 150 €) Salutes! An Origin? Would be more close to the real CS than the VST version? There are some signature sounds on the real CS I never could get on the VST version. (as guitar 1+Bass for example). --- In yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, David Rogoff <david@...> wrote: > > georgesporopat wrote: > > Are you dreaming the same as me? > > A CS80R (rack, a big one) ? That Yamaha CS smell, if it's the same one as comes from my CS-50, is also found in Nintendo cartridges from the 8 bit and 16 bit era. NES games, especially the instruction booklets, have the same distinctive smell. No idea what it is, some permitted compound in Japan maybe? (that's not permitted elsewhere perhaps)

Mine smells like stale mouse urine. I think it spent some time in a storage room at Joseph River's girlfriend's horse ranch. Still, I have developed a Pavlovian conditioning that makes my brain squirt out endorphins every time I smell it..... To quote that creepy old man in the movie Christine: "....it's the finest smell in the world. Except maybe for pussy!" ;-P

One of the signature smells in a lot of Japanese instruments from the 60s & 70s comes from particles of smoke from the strong tobacco the factory workers tended to light up during assembly shifts. The flux traps these particles and then hardens as it absorbs moisture and slowly glassifies over time. I get a roomful of tobacco odor every time I re-chip a circuit board in a CS-80. Melt the flux during desoldering, and the tobacco particles and released along with lead fumes, etc. The other particular smell is that of aged wood. The chassis of the CS machines, largely being wood, age over time and absorb all sorts of odors in the process, the result of which is that "vintage" smell. Crow /**/

The Infinite Response website (http://www.infiniteresponse.com/) says they'll have several versions of the VAX77 keyboard at NAMM. Someone from IR or Arturia needs to make sure a VAX77 and an Origin are hooked up together to try the poly aftertouch response! The Origin is finally real (but where can I see it in the US?) and the VAX77 is almost real. This could be an amazing combination! As big as chocolate with peanut butter (which I personally hate, but it is popular)! PS - anyone know where I can get a pass for NAMM? Please? I'll buy you lunch...

Even more amazing would be if the Studio Electronics Code/Omega with CS80 filters would respond to polyphonic aftertouch. To get a full set of 8 dual-channel voices with independent HPF/LPF (like on the real CS80) you would actually need two Omegas though! Then you'd get an extra oscillator on each voice which would be cool. I have been using dual multimode on the Code (sounds amazing) but you only get 4 voices that way and right now it is not possible to save voice edits in multi mode (no worse than the CS80 I guess). And of course for now there is only channel aftertouch. One can dream... They finally have a good video up on Sonic State: http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2009/01/29/wnamm09-polyphonic-aftertouch-in-a-folding-keyboard/ Should be out in May. Now we have to have them add a ribbon and a bunch of sliders to it! Kind-of expensive, but to have a 29lb (~13kg) Poly-Aftertouch keyboard that goes in a backpack that can be carried put in an overhead on a plane is pretty cool! Too bad you have to choose the key weight up front. I had a Peavy years ago that had a big lever to adjust the entire action. I also remember an very old article from Computer Music Journal about a keyboard that used electromagnets to dynamically adjust the action, including adding stuff like the click of a harpsichord jack hitting! They only built a single octave worth and it looked like it weighed 50lbs just for that! David --- In yamahacs80@yahoogroups.com, Scott Metzger <scottmetzger3d@...> wrote:

I am really looking forward to checking this out at the Frankfurt show. However the questions remains - and I guess it has been discussed here in the forum a while ago - for those who want to mainly use it with a CS80 (like myself): what is the the proper key weight to choose? the Heaviest.......they were talking about adding a new heavier weight at namm09 to the request of the people that checked out the booth......the action is responsive to touch.... so if you play lightly, the keys go down easily and send out low velocity, but if you strike it forcefully, it reacts with the weighted action more prominently.....and of course sends out the maximum velocity.....this allows for its speedy key response........the fastest ever.... They were talking about canceling the lightest weight as no one really took to it.....a heavier action was the request by most piano players....my measurements on my 80 also showed me a slightly heavier weight would be needed to send the key down and be be CS80 accurate....
