CS60 for cannibalizing...?

CS60 for cannibalizing...?

2007-09-17 by cuari7

All,

Do you think it's a good idea to purchase a not-perfect CS60 to have
as source of parts for my '80 (in case they're needed, of course?).
Been debating about this...

Definitely! You could even sell half the voice cards (I'd take one for
a reasonable price).

You'd have almost every spare part but the keyboard and the poly
aftertouch boards (which don't have any special Yamaha chips on them).

I've actually read that the osc range is less wide in the '60. Is this
true?

I'll take 2 voice cards if they go up for sell.....

No, the cards are the same, except for a few resistor values in the
octave-switch circuit. I don't remember the details, but I'm sure
others in the group know. And, I think that's just for the CS50, since
it had a smaller keyboard.

It's the same for the CS-50 and CS-60. Both have resistor networks for 4
octave ranges, let's call them 16', 8', 4' and 2' (although Yamaha doesn't
use this terminology). The smaller keyboard on the CS-50 is implemented
using simply - a smaller keyboard!

The CS-80 voice cards have resistor networks for 6 ranges, 16', 8', 5 1/3',
4', 2 2/3' and 2'.

So what is the concensus here guys?

I bought a voice card (from a cs60 I think it was) as spare for my
cs80. Does this mean that it won't work even with modification?

I need to know please...;^)

Cheers.

If you wanted to swap out the whole card, then yes, you'd have to change
a few resistors. But no sane person would do that. You would just use
the spare card as a source of parts to replace bad ones. I don't even
want to think about moving all the wires from one board to another. It
would have been nice if they had used connectors like the old Oberheim
stuff, but that could have lead to a lot of cleaning of corroded connectors.

I just did exactly that; removed all the wires from a voiceboard that I¹m
getting replaced. It isn¹t that bad. I had it cleanly out in less than 5
minutes. I imagine that soldering the new board in place won¹t be much more
difficult.

A little known aspect of the Yamaha CS voice assigner chip is that it is in
fact configurable from 1 to 8 voices in units of one voice. So you could
maybe make it a 7 voice CS-60 if you cannot repair the faulty voice card.

This is a hold-over from the key assigners used in Electone organs.
Most of the "PASS" models of the 1970s used 7-voice key assigners along
with some combinatorial logic to obtain 11-note polyphony across the
usual two keyboard manuals and pedalboard. The tone generator was a
wavetable type and not limited to sines (not bad for 1975) while the
filters were IG00155 SVF chips, a close relative of the IG00156 except
there was no keyboard tracking voltage control input. The EGs were
interesting: diode-programmable digital function generators, a kind of
ancestor to the EG-S chip of the DX line in later years. VCAs were the
IG00151--so find old Yamaha home organs put to pasture and liberate soem
IG chips. ;)

Crow, who has this EX-2 Electone and visions of kitbashing it into an,
er, GX-2. Eh..someday..

This is interesting Scott,

Would it be possible to have a list of exactly which Electone organs
are *the ones* as a source for spare CS80 chips..?

Do any use the IG00156 chip..?
