Re: Can someone help me with the sequence for Baba O'Rielly

2009-09-01 by Benjamin Edge

Rick,

The intro to "Baba O'Riley" was played on a 1968 model Lowrey model Berkshire Deluxe plate #TBO-1 organ (although, contrary to popular opinion, some had said that the keyboard Pete Townshend used for the sequence was an ARP 2500 modular synthesizer). It has a "marimba repeat" button. The key notes that sound ON the beat, when held down, seem to be: F-G and B-C# as well as G#-A# and D-E. A "wah-wah" setting (called "wow wow") was used on the demo version of the song, but is not very noticeable on the released 1971 version (as here it is used solely for tone control). Many reports abound over this song claim Townshend had recorded this part at 1/2 speed, which made the playback sound fast and frantic (Terry Riley had often done that), and in realtime, this sounds quite possible.
