Benchtop supply recommendations

Benchtop supply recommendations

2013-07-21 by Adrian Corston

I realise this is a fairly wide-open question, but hopefully some people
will be happy to share their thoughts...

I'd like to buy a reasonable 'beginner' benchtop power supply, for work
up to around 30V and 5A, preferably dual output if at all possible. I
would like the usual bells and whistles like constant voltage, constant
current and adjustable current control. I don't want the cheap rubbish
but I'm only looking for the next level up; I don't need a
top-of-the-range unit. I'm hoping to pay around $300 and I'm located in
Australia so locally available brands would be great too.

Is this in the ballpark? What models do you recommend? Any
makes/models I should definitely avoid?

There are a lot of older units that come up in auctions regularly - are
there any models I should be on the lookout for, and if so what sort of
price is reasonable for a second-hand one?

Thanks,
A.

Have a look on Youtube for EEVBLOG, he does a lot of reviews on test
equipment and I seem to remember there are several bench PSU's covered.

From you point of view he is also Australian so any supplier info will also
be relevant.

Many thanks

John Rose

I've got a variety of Heath / Heathkit power supplies on my bench, and I like them (or they wouldn't still be there):
IP-2718 Tri-output (but low current).
IP-27 50v 1.5A
IP-2710 30v 3A
IP-2730 7.5v 10A
The 2710 and 2730 have a lot of features on them, which I haven't had the need for, but they're great power supplies. If you search on ebay for "heathkit ip" you'll always find some available. They're usually adaptable to whatever source power you're feeding into the unit. If you need a manual and it's not included, you can get it from http://www.d8apro.com/
