J-Wires: Where or What?

J-Wires: Where or What?

2013-02-27 by Boddington

Hey everyone!

Where are you guys sourcing j-wires or what are you using to make them? I'm just planning a restoration where a whole set of keys is missing some the assembly parts like that (blech).

Thanks!

I use tin-plated guitar strings. I don't remember which gauge. A single string can replace a lot of j-wires. I just used digital calipers to measure some real j-wires and got the closest I could find.

So called J wires should be gold plated to reduce corrosion issues and enhance electrical properties.

That's a really great idea with the guitar strings. Thanks for that! I guess if one finds gold plated that's a bonus, though I have to say that the originals I've come across haven't appeared to be gold plated. I'll take another look next time.

But no one's actually selling these, are they?

I harvest and form my own from a bunch of old Baldwin contact boards. How many you need? As I believe I have a few left.

Thanks so much for the offer! I won't need too many. 4-8? Have to open up the machine again and take a clsoe look. It's been a while.
Thanks!
