Matrix 1000

Matrix 1000

2011-11-12 by Steve Mays

I just took my Matrix 1000 out of long term storage (that means my
closet). Works fine when first turned on but after a few seconds when
playing a single note line (such as a bass line) I get notes that are
softer than others (which doesn't happen until after being on a minute
or so). I didn't get an owner's manual with it and would like to get
that and a service manual if anyone has them. I'm figuring that the one
or two of the voices are causing the problem so I plan to start
troubleshooting there. If any of you have seen this problem please let
me know. (Is there a way to get this thing into mono mode? I'm using the
module for bass lines so I don't need polyphony at the moment.)

Hi Steve

There is also a Yahoo group for Oberheim synths. The link is:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/oberheim/

The manual will explain how to run the calibration for the voices. If one is still weak it may be one of the the CEM3396 voice chips has failed.

There is a unison mode where you can play all the voices in mono or if you set the midi channel to G1 (up to G9) each midi channel will have a mono voice for the six voices. The starting channel for G1 is channel 1, G2 is channel 2 etc...

thats a psu issue cuased by ripple in the filter caps which are getting hot and failing over time
if it was a problem with the voice chips if they fail they either give out very load static sound
or dont produce any sound at all
by all means do a calibration first
but power filter caps have a life expectancy of 2000-4000 hours use at constant voltage
they will out perform this hour rating but will fail
change for military grade 105oc of same capacitance 10000 hours life
its a common thing on american synths
ensoniq /emu/ sequencial /moog /oberheim all suffer from this

Thanks for the various replies. I've gotten the manuals and schematics
and plan to try the calibrations first. As for the power supply
caps...I'd suspect it would cause more widespread problems but I will
certainly check and change them. The unit has a fairly low number of
miles on it. This will be a good warmup for my next project...my MiniMoog!

I am curious....does anyone know if an actual service manual was ever
produced for this? If so is it posted somewhere?
