Yamaha AN1x Battery Replacement Question

Yamaha AN1x Battery Replacement Question

2011-06-23 by Samuel Adams

Hi,
I need advice on how to change the battery in a Yamaha AN1x synth. I've looked through the manual but didn't find instructions on how to do this. I have a stand-alone unit that's not hooked up to a computer or external sequencer, etc. so I'm not sure how to replace the battery and retain the factory sound programs when changing the battery. I'm thinking of taking the bottom off, plugging the unit in and changing the battery with external power hooked-up. Is this the correct way to do this? Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks

I suppose there's factory reset function so after changing battery
you can easily get original sounds. Of course you can save bulk dump
into external sequencer if you have your own sounds or other than
factory set in RAM.

It's not necessary to change battery with plugged power supply,
anyway instrument should be switched off during the change.

I just can't remember if battery is in holder or soldered...
hopefully in the holder like in all newer Yamaha machines. Just use
the same type, usually it's CR2032.

Good luck.

It isn't a CR2032. From memory, it's the less common CR2450.

It is socketed and I can confirm it is possible to change it while the unit is switched on - just be careful not to touch anything other than the battery. I did it without any problems. The toughest part is the insane number of screws you have to undo to take the bottom off.

I've heard of problems where people have swapped out the battery with the unit powered down. If you do that you will have to do a factory reset and a midi dump to get your presets back. I believe without the factory reset you'll have problems with things like the ribbon controller. I'm not sure though how you do the reset though. I swapped the battery 'live' to avoid such problems.

I have found this in my archive:

Yamaha AN1x reset:
1) Turn OFF the power.
2) Press and hold the (7), (8) and (9) buttons down simultaneously while turning ON the power.
3) Continue to hold the buttons down until a dialog box appears on the screen displaying, Factory Set?
(1---9).
4) Release the (7), (8) and (9) buttons and choose one of the following resets by pressing the
corresponding button:
Button (1): Loads Voices 1-64.
Button (2): Loads Voices 65-128.
Button (3): Loads all 128 Voices.
Button (4): Loads all Voices sorted by Voice Category.
Button (5): Loads User Patterns 1-64.
Button (6): Loads User Patterns 65-128.
Button (7): Loads all User Patterns.
;Button (8): Loads system data.
Button (9): Loads all Voices, User Patterns and system data (full factory reset).
5) Press the (YES/ENTER) button.
The AN1X will execute the Initialization procedure and return to (Play mode).

Thanks to all who've responded!
BOTH of these postings are helpful plus the guy I brought the battery from said he's including instructions on how to replace the battery.
