Roland RS-09 annoying noise

Roland RS-09 annoying noise

2008-02-27 by eggwheatis

My Rolans RS-09 makes a high pitched wine like a TV (well maybe not as
high as that but similar) when not being played..it's not very loud
and it's still useable but it's very annoying. I guess it's about as
loud as the hiss. It's sounds like a high pitched organ tone stuck
on. It's not supposed to do this right? Any info on fixing it?
schematics would be nice :o)

Thanks, Phil.

Is the sound coming through the cable (electronically), or directly off
the unit (physical sound)?
If it comes right off the unit, it could be a component in the power
supply that should be glued down, but is occilating.

No its a sound through the speakers...it reacts to the
master tune like a normal sound..I say it sounds like
a high pitched organ tone but I tried the Organ Raw
out/sig jack and the noise disappears..so i doubt it's
in that circuit.

is this noise in tune with the other sounds the keyboard makes? you
say it is affected by the master volume, I think, but does it alter in
pitch with the tuning control? it could be leakage from the master
oscillator through a VCA that's gone bad, or it could be chorus-clock.
does the chorus effect still work properly? (one of my favourite
things on the rs09 is to put external audio through this)
does yours have the huge rocker switches or the LED buttons? could be
the electronics that scan these switches if it's the later model. any
case, check the power supply for failed components that could be
allowing this kind of crosstalk (parasitic oscillation) onto the audio
path. it's a linear power supply in these keyboards (thank heavens) so
it's not likely to be the power supply itself...
good luck, & don't forget to let us know what turns up.

Cheers, phil.

did it start suddenly or gradually? could give a clue as to what
component has failed.... is the noise related to one pitch or does it
seem to be the whole scale sounding at once?

but without schemos, we're poking around in the dark here. anyone know
what the rs09 architecture is? seems to me to be a twelve-osc
top-divider type thing.... anyone got any thoughts on this?

It's always been there..it sound related to one note
not a whole scale.

I havent been able to find any schems for it.

Thanks, Phil.

Hi,

I´ve worked on both RS-09 and Korg Delta, however I do not remember
what the IC´s are called in the RS-09 but they look very similar to what
was in the Delta.

If you open the RS-09 you will se a PCB with two big IC´s on it and
the same number of electrolytic caps as the RS has keys. The big IC´s
are probably the octave dividers, there also should be an top octave
divider IC nearby.

My guess is this. If the nosie problem is only on one key like say F3
and none of the other F keys are effected by the problem, then it is
most likley one of the octave divider IC´s gone bad. If it however effects
all F keys it would mostlikley be the Topoctave divider IC that is at fault.

Best regards,
/RL
