OT: Two Samson monitors burnt out at once...

One of my Samson 65a monitors has started to give distorted sound. Opening it up, I found two fried resistors. I opened the other one up so I can see what values the transistors are of, and surprisingly found that they were at the stage of being fried as well (although the second unit still works ok). My qeustion - what could make those particular resistors go bad on both of the units ?? Was it a short somewhere - I would expect only one of the units to go bad.... And another question - will using high wattage resistor in place of the fried ones be a wise step ?... I assume that if there is a short somewhere I won't be able to notice it as the high wattage resistor just won't fry out... Thanks for any advice.
