Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-25 by freeloverdk

Hi All.

I have a question. I just received an Arp Odyssey (Whiteface) in the mail today i bought
from Canada. I live in Denmark (Europe)

The wall-plugs here is different, and we have 220 V in stead of 110 V. I have a converter
for the PLUG ONLY, but Do i also need an external converter to convert my power from
220 to 110 V before i plug it in? I'm not sure if the Arp adjusts itself?

From this diagram i found, it looks as if the Arp can tale 115-230 V - but I'm not sure this
is right. Can anyone please help me with this?

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-25 by Brian Davies

Hi Michael

Looking at the power unit circuit diagram all you need to do is swap the
tapping point from 115V to 230V, note that the whole of Europe now operates
on 230V although if you measure the voltage you will probably find that it
is actually 220V in Denmark, while here in the UK it is 240V as measured!

Given that the diagram clearly shows a tapping system on the input
transformer you should find some easy means to adjust the tapping.

Regards

Brian G3OYU

Thank you very much for your answer Brian!

The tap must be inside the box then, right? Because there is no switch
on the outside.

I hope that will be the solution!

Best,
Michael

I can only suggest that you locate the mains transformer and see what tappings may be on there. Possibly you will have to take a soldering iron to it.

Hi again Brian

Ok, I must admit - I know nothing about electronics like that. To move
any wire's around, or anything like that - is just too risky business
for me, when I don't know what I'm doing.

But I appreciate what you're saying.

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-25 by Brian Davies

Michael, the other option is to buy an auto-transformer that has a 110V-115V output and a 220V-230V input, then you don\u2019t have to worry about altering anything inside the unit. You plug the input into your mains and the keyboard into the output.

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-25 by Steve Alcorn

Michael,

If you trace the wires from the cord through the switch to the transformer, you will find that they connect to the black and white leads of the transformer for 110VAC operation. For 220VAC operation the black and blue leads should be used. (This may be easy, if you find a jumper between the blue and white lead. Simply remove it.) If you don't feel comfortable making the change, any electronics repair place can easily do it if you give them the unit and the schematic. It's less than a five-minute job.

Hi again Brian

Ok, I must admit - I know nothing about electronics like that. To move any wire's around, or anything like that - is just too risky business for me, when I don't know what I'm doing.

But I appreciate what you're saying.

Best,
Michael

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-25 by timothy kosiorek

Hello:If I remember correctly there are markings on the circuit board where
the power transformer connects up that say 110 or 220 depending on which
pins you put the plugs on.

Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-28 by Steve

OK, I have my Odyssey apart for cleaning and took the opportunity to
examine the back panel connections to the power supply board. There
are stake-on connectors and even a sticker on the rear panel that
indicates where the wire should be pushed on for 110 or 240 VAC
operation. No tools required. (Except a Philips head screwdriver to
remove the six side screws and eight bottom ones.) This information
applies to the yellow on black Mark II model (2813), but may be the
same for white and orange units, too.

leads of the transformer for 110VAC operation. For 220VAC operation
the black and blue leads should be used. (This may be easy, if you
find a jumper between the blue and white lead. Simply remove it.) If
you don't feel comfortable making the change, any electronics repair
place can easily do it if you give them the unit and the schematic.
It's less than a five-minute job.

Re: [vintagesynthrepair] Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-28 by Michael Adler Miltersen

Hi Steve, and everyone else.

Thank you so much for the reply's - i treasure this forum.

I made a very very easy solution, and bought a 220>110 converter for
20$. It works like a charm.

I appreciate the input. You guys has been great.

Best,
Michael.

What brand of converter did you get? What rating - 100 Watts?? Thanks.

Hi Steve, and everyone else.

Thank you so much for the reply's - i treasure this forum.

I made a very very easy solution, and bought a 220>110 converter for
20$. It works like a charm.

I appreciate the input. You guys has been great.

Best,
Michael.

Hi Kyle.

I got a converter called MW - and it's 45 Watts. The electronics guy
told me that would be allright. I hope it is - well, it works.

Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-29 by kar_chicago

Makes sense...i see the Odyssey has power consumption of only 20
watts, so a 45 watt transformer would be great. My JP8 has 90 Watt
consumption...so I'm wondering if a 100 watt transformer is
sufficient or if I should go with a 200W for extra headroom.

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-29 by Steve Alcorn

These transformers convert the output voltage, but not the line frequency. For older devices such as analog synths this isn\u2019t a problem. But keep in mind that they run warmer on 60Hz power than 50Hz power, because of the increased duty cycle (even though it seems like the same amount of power is being delivered). So you might want to go with the 200watt model.

Subject: [vintagesynthrepair] Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

Makes sense...i see the Odyssey has power consumption of only 20
watts, so a 45 watt transformer would be great. My JP8 has 90 Watt
consumption...so I'm wondering if a 100 watt transformer is
sufficient or if I should go with a 200W for extra headroom.

RE: [vintagesynthrepair] Re: Arp Odyssey Power 110/220V?

2005-10-29 by Brian Davies

Hi All

It is not quite as simple as saying the ‘increased duty cycle’. In fact due to the higher frequency the iron losses will be less on 60Hz than on 50Hz due to the reduction in Gauss, the flux density, which is inversely proportional to frequency.

This is easily proved. Consider the size and weight of a switch power supply where the ‘frequency’ is of the order of thousands of Hz and the transformer is a tiny little thing.

So the rule of thumb is if you increase the frequency you reduce the amount of iron.

Regards

Brian G3OYU

These transformers convert the output voltage, but not the line frequency. For older devices such as analog synths this isn’t a problem. But keep in mind that they run warmer on 60Hz power than 50Hz power, because of the increased duty cycle (even though it seems like the same amount of power is being delivered). So you might want to go with the 200watt model.

Makes sense...i see the Odyssey has power consumption of only 20
watts, so a 45 watt transformer would be great. My JP8 has 90 Watt
consumption...so I'm wondering if a 100 watt transformer is
sufficient or if I should go with a 200W for extra headroom.
