The connections to the battery should be an issue to look at when you turn the 
power off and stuff isn't saved.  I don't have the impression that this is 
what's happening here,  I thought that the patch would appear (from the 
operator's perspective) to save properly but wouldn't,  actually,  so the 
problem is somewhere else,  likely caused by corrosion from the old battery 
that hasn't been completely cleaned up yet.
