The safest way to get a dud CPU out is to cut all the pins as close to the CUP as possible then take the pins out one at a time by heating the pin from the component side of the board and easing it out with the iron. Apologies if you already knew this. Battery residue would make a great conductor :-) try getting at it with an old tooth brush.
