Vintage Synth Repair

I have some really dirty pots in my EML 101.  Can I replace them 
with a newer pot, such as an ALPS without losing performance?  
Or is there something sacred about the old Allen Bradley Type J 
pots? I can't put cleaner in them because they are airtight.
Seems to me, a newer one would do better. Then again I know 
nothing about them.
Any advice?
