tube synth diy

Hi,

Would the photomultipliers be of any use?
Like the 2055 I just know of it's existance.

I have seen a few books with photomultiplier circuits but none of them
seemed suitable for synth apps....at least to me....2000V power supply
and very sensitive.
If you want I can have a 2nd look...probably just the thought of
trying to source a photomultiplier put me off.

Have you checked out photo-detector tubes, they can be pretty cheap on
ebay. I got 6 for $5 last year, tho 3 of them were corroded.
There are a few ccts for these in files, an interesting one could be
made with the Douglas envelope shaping circuit. Or if you want to go
all Raymond Scott, check out Weber - low freq waveform generator.
Also worth a look is 'blind aid' in medical ccts - scanning a
photodetector tube over print gives tones that are (supposedly)
complex enough for the listener to identify the letters.

Hey, that sounds like the Iannis Xenakis IRCAM's "UPIC", that would be super!

Beyond Xenakis compositions, a composer (can't recall who) did very interesting music
"reading" Pablo Palazuelo's paintings (wich are very geometric) with the UPIC.
