MIDI stability and other items

2004-06-11 by bcomnes

I spent some time on the phone today with David of Wine Country on
several issues regarding my "new" 2002.

Disk error - Lh = locked head , that's not in the manual, means drive
is most likely dead. I took my drive out and loosened it and now it
tries to work , but formatting a drive yields iF which is bad format
which means the drive although now unstuck is probably
misaligned....time for a new drive for sure

MIDI stability and odd Notes with Roland GI-20 guitar controller,
David thinks its due to the fact the Roland MIDI stuff sends too much
irrelevant data to the Prophet , so I am going to turn on the MIDI
filters in the GI-20 and report back to this group

the 4 on 4 off problem - voices are allocated on trigger and that;s
why even the same note over and over goes 4 on 4 off unless you have
the balance Knob centered at around 11 O'clock , its rotating through
the allocations

best place to get sound out is the MONO/RIGHT jack. Using left and
right together or "stereo" out is only for people who really need to
separate the sounds...otherwise consider it a mono device and don't
forget the balance knob

Yes there is no MIDI support to externally control the VCA and filter
cutoffs and resonance and ADSR.....it's Pitch Wheel and Mod Wheel
only...

I thought Wine Country was very generous with their time,
now if I only had the money for a new drive, I could load the
samples bought...c'est la vie

The disk thing - new idea?

Has anyone tried simply imaging a p2k sample disk in RAW and then writing
the image to a new disk (with WINimage or similar) I cannot try it since I
am looking for a new drive but theoretically it should work.

Many PC-type drives will work in the Prophet. The problem is that it
expects a drive to be jumpered for "Drive Select 0", whereas a PC expects
the drive to be jumpered for "Drive Select 1". In the old days, drives had
a switch or jumper to change the drive select. Now most are hard-jumpered
for Drive Select 1. You can either modify the drive, or the Prophet to make
a new drive work. On the drive I used, I found a small surface mount
resistor on it's circuit board across a position labeled "DS1". I
unsoldered it and moved it to a position labeled "DS0", and the drive
works. Others who have done the modification at the Prophet end may tell
you how to do that. Or you can get a drive from Wine Country, but they're
expensive.
