Re: What's special in the Prophet 2000

2008-05-17 by TonyB

Hi Charles, I believe it! So your P2000 was DOA?? Bummer!! I've just
read part of a pdf manual on the P2000. There is no "backup battery".
Yes, after powerup, there *should* be some sounds. These are the
"built in" sounds (samples) on the ROM (Read Only Memory). All these
synths are basically a microcontroller that scans knobs and keys and
switches and outputs audio. The P2000 does all this and
"records/samples" input sounds as well. But, you'all know that
already(?) :-) The P2000 uses a Motorolla 68000 cpu derivitive. If
the CPU (central processing unit--"the computer chip") is not working
correctly, or, worse, intermittently, it's probably due to a
bad/faulty power supply or connections that have gone flakey, or are
going bad, or memory with similar problems. Let me get my P2000
powered up and give some accurate info on what to look for and tests
you can do to narrow down the possiblities for troubleshooting. In my
Prophet5, one of the problems was dust on the top pcb's. The dust
here in sacramento is conductive. I believe this was part of the
multiplexing problem I had. I'm wanting to sell my P2000, so I need to
go over all the functions before I list it. BTW, i'm an engineering
tech & have been working on synths, fuzz boxes and amps for over
30yrs. Hope I can help out. Give me a few more dayz.... afn T
