Desperately seeking the patch manual

Desperately seeking the patch manual

2001-08-21 by Erik Peterson

Hello all!

I'm the original owner of a Polysix. I'm trying to revitalize it's
use in our band, but I cannot locate my patch manual. All KORG has
for us is the owners manual (which I ordered, assuming it was the
patch manual).

If anyone has the manual, please contact me. I am just dying to
twist some knobs again. None of my other synth's hold up to how I
remember this synth sounding.

HI!

wow, a 'Patch Manual'. WTF is that? I've never heard of such a
thing. What does it do? Tell you how to make patches? I must be
picturing the wrong thing, because it seems to me that my idea of a
'patch manual' for a polysix would be absolutely unnecessary.
I could understand the use for a p-61 because doesn't it have
displays and menus and things? The PolySix has one knob for each
function. Just turn them until you get a sound you like, then save
it. I don't see how it could get much easier. I mean, we aren't
programming a DX-7 here.
Could you explain what this "patch manual" does please?
thanks!

hmmm....thanks for the prompt reply ben...it's nice to see that this
group isn't dead :-)

i seem to have offended you with my choice of words, so let me
apologize for that. i'll try to describe this 3rd manual (i DO have
the service manual and the owners manual) that was included with my
polysix that i'm trying to locate.

it was about a 12 page document. the only thing this paper listed
was how to set each knob to produce a certain sound. for example, if
you wanted a flute, set all the knobs to look like this, and
allakhazam! a flute sound is produced.

this manual went on to list strings, bass, wind instruments, spacey
sounds, etc. It also was the settings for the factory defaults
included my the (now missing) tape. (and i think that the tape was
also labeled "patch tape" So, in theory, i could sit there and
twist the knobs to try to find some sound that i am looking for, but
i was hoping to bypass the trial and error phase, and get some
assitance from someone who may have this "patch manual" that went
with the "patch tape"

regards in adavance

Hi,

I think, Erik means the factory setting manual. I have a copy of an
original Korg manual called "Setting Charts". It consists of the
patch charts of two sets of sounds (2x32); the factory presets which
also are on the patch tape ("Memory Cassette") which was supplied with
Polysix. I have got the factory sounds also in ASCII text format,
which can be loaded into Polysix via my MIDI kit.
Maybe there is some genius windows programmer who can make a program
that is able to print true Polysix patch charts from raw patch data?

ahh.. no offense was taken. sorry for my choice of wording though.
after I had sent the mail, I thought that this might be what you were
talking about. Thinking about it though, I think it would be much
easier to use a digital keyboard with 285720 presets to use a flute,
cello, koto, etc sound. I just think that using a polysix for making
a flute sound would be an insult to it's abilities.

and to answer your original question, no, I don't have a copy of it,
nor do I know where to find one. Good luck though. Maybe somebody
else on the list will chime in with a copy!

Re: Desperately seeking the patch manual

aye Johannes, that would be the one!

i'm hoping to use it as a starting point, not to duplicate exact
tonal qualities that are adequately produced on some of my other gear
(ie. i have enough digital garbage...would love to get my true
analog synth back into the picture, but the settings manual would
help give me a starting point to work with)

again, i apologize for using the word "patch" in the context of an
analog synth list...my choice of words appears to have been poor

Try starting with the Andromeda or (shudder!) an FM synth...eek! Things
get a little complex there.

Synths like the PolySix and Minimoog are joys to program because they're
rather limited, comparatively speaking. Although, yeah, it's nice to have
a starting point. Someone posted a while back how to get nice string
sounds out of the P6---thanks! Good starting point for those kinds of
sounds. (It'll be in the archives.)

If you need the original patch "tapes" to restore the factory patches to
your machine, the .WAV files are available at http://analog.no

"Patch" is accurate as far as I'm concerned.

Then again I still call the memory in my PC "core"... :-)

nah, your words were just fine man... I still don't see the point of
having this list/manual but to each his own! As for me, I'll just
twist away blindly!

Johannes,

You have a midi kit? Do you have a website, URL,
description? That would great!!

Thanks,

Dave
