can't write to memory correctly after battery repair

can't write to memory correctly after battery repair

2018-07-10 by ratriderz@yahoo.com

Hi, I acquired a Polysix that had the dreaded battery leakage. I cleaned the board, checked all the traces in the area and repaired a few, replaced the battery and also had to replace IC 31. The keyboard now works fine except that it does not save the patches correctly.  If I create a patch, and then write it to a new location, the patch will sound correctly until I go to another patch and return to the previous saved location, which now just has garbage. The patch saved in that location will for some reason have settings that prevent it from sounding correctly, like cutoff all the way down or bad envelope settings, I'll have to adjust numerous parameters to get a normal sounding patch. It doesn't seem to be the saved patch minus a few adjustments, at least there's no pattern that I can detect like attack and cutoff always store incorrectly but some other parameters store correctly.

Any advice on how to determine if the issue is that the patches are not storing correctly versus not being retrieved from memory correctly, or what components might be suspect?  I rechecked the traces in the area around the battery on KLM 367 but could not find any additional issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

There is some obvious corrosion on the data line traces by the 74LS08 chip next to the battery. This battery wasn’t replaced until after the old one started leaking, and it doesn’t look like anything was done to neutralize the alkaline liquid from the battery. The corrosion is probably still spreading.

I too am troubleshooting the same issue.  I had my battery replaced 10-15 yrs ago and all worked well.  Now recently my memory bank is all lit up and not functioning.  I'm going to clean the board up a bit as maybe it simply got tarnished from being in storage.

What I would suggest is to get the board out of there and put some vinegar (a weak acid) on the area around the battery to neutralize it, then rinse it off with a zero-residue contact cleaner (not the kind with added lubricants in it). Then you will need an ohm-meter to check all of those blackened traces under the 74LS08 chip. The chip is probably toast and will need to be removed. It would be best to put the replacement chip in a socket, so you solder the socket to the board and just pop the chip in without any unnecessary heat applied to the chip. Any traces on the board that measure more than a fraction of an ohm will need a jumper wire soldered in to replace them. Sorry if this sounds complicated, but if you know what to look for, there is quite a bit of damage. Solder points should be shiny silver, not powdery gray. Copper traces on the board should be copper colored (although a bit greenish since they are under that green coating that covers the board), not blackened. The stuff that comes out of a leaked battery is just a couple of drops and spreads like penetrating oil. It might not look wet at all. It sounds like the battery was replaced before it caused any obvious damage, but not before it leaked. Now it has had 10-15 more years to wreak havoc. There are two of those 74LS08 chips in there, but I couldn’t tell from the video if the other one also has damage around it.

Super thanks for the online diagnosis.  Based on your feedback I'm going to do this:

1) Pull the board, clean up, and test the surrounding traces

2) Replace the potentially fried chips via the rec'd approach with a socket vs. direct chip

3) Test and re-assemble.

While pulling this out I may also clean the key contacts as well as the knob contacts.

I've attached a couple photos verifying the corrosion that you mentioned as well as a spot where they repaired a broken circuit via a lead.

Thanks again - I'll post back updates here.

Best,
Adam
