Polysix Memory Expansion

Polysix Memory Expansion

2015-07-15 by grantbt@jps.net

I wonder with all these KLM367 replacement boards and various MIDI options, do any of these offer expanded patch memory?

I ask because back in the late 80's (I guess) I sold a kit through EM Magazine that increased the patch memory from 32 to 96. The downside is there was definitely soldering involved. The upside is the bank selection was done using existing panel switches (decoding an unused combination of buttons). Is this pointless now that these new boards offer more memory than a stock P6? Anyway, I just stumbled on my old design and that triggered this question. I don't have a P6 at this time...

The Kiwisix does so. Quote from http://www.kiwitechnics.com/kiwisix.htm:

"1024 Tones can be stored and edited. It is also possible to temporarily
edit any Tone. Tones are selected using a two button system. The first
button selects the high digit (bank 1-8) and the second button the low
digit (Tone 1-8). This allows 64 tones (1-1 to 8-8) on any bank group.
There are 16 bank groups that are selected using the A-D bank buttons."

Short answer is: Yes :)

The various kits for the P6 provide additional patch memory, using new button combos also.,

Cheers

The KiwiSix is one of two boards I’ve heard of that adds more patch memory. It has 1024, with full MIDI CC and SYSEX support. Johannes Hausensteiner has a MIDI kit that also expands memory to 128. The other various MIDI kits only affect the key assigner board (KLM-366) not the programmer board (KLM-367). The two clone KLM-367 out there (one from Jed and Andy, one from Old Crow) are really clones with no change in functionality. Tubbutec has two kits for Polysix. The ModyPoly adds MIDI, some new unison modes, arpeggiator functions and a Sample and Hold feature for the filter. The PolySex does some interesting pitch modulation with a couple of extra LFOs. The Kenton MIDI kit does note on/off and program change via both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT, as well as patch dump and load (SYSEX) but still with 32 patches. MIDI IN also handles pitch wheel, mod wheel. CHD ELEKTROSERVIS has a MIDI kit that also looks like it handles eight other CC#.

Did I miss any current kits? Sorry if I gave your favorite kit a less-than-complete description.

You can easily double the patch memory by soldering a 2nd RAM chip onto
the old one. You have to make the nCS signal switchable, e.g. via a
front panel switch ner the Pbend / Mod wheels. Wire the switch this way:

                                 |----------o RAM chip 1 pin 8
              IC25/pin11 o------/
                                 |----------o RAM chip 2 pin 8

Either one RAM chip is active or the other. The inactive chip has to
have a pullup resistor on its select pin, so add a 10k Ohms resistor
from pin8 to pin 18 to each RAM chip.

Have fun!

I always wanted to try that, but using a very small switch that will fit somewhere up near the other patch buttons. Maybe I’ll find a little switch and include it in my next Mouser order.
