Issue with Voice One

Issue with Voice One

2015-04-23 by taylorjmandel@yahoo.com

Hello everyone. I'm brand new to the forum, though I have done a little stalking in recent months, and have finally built up the courage to post a thread on here. I'm fairly new to the analog synth game and this polysix is like my first born. Love it.

Had the battery replaced upon receiving it and most everything is in working order except for one voice. I've followed the leds on the inside and narrowed it down to voice #1. The voice sounds worst when cutoff is all the way up. It's less noticeable when its at about half way but clearly still an issue.

I don't have much other information about my problem BUT I do have a video of me playing and cycling through the voices. My first guess would be a busted resistor or cap but I really have no idea. It would be wonderful if simply one of these trimmers needs to be adjusted but I don't think so.

Anyway, here is the video. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Polysix Voice Issue

Hi,

Try swapping IC32 for that voice with IC32 for another voice...

These are the SSM2044 filter chips and reside near the leds for each voice.

Obviously, disconnect power and be very very careful not to damage the chips... Hopefully you have the right tools.

If the problems follows the chip to the other voice then it's the SSM2044...

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I already tried that (should have said that in the first post) and the problem didn't follow so it doesn't seem like the filter chip is the issue. Thanks though.

Ah ok - try checking the 4051 on IC23. The schematics will show which pins to compare... helpful if you have a scope.

Hello

Does the problem appear on all waveform settings at the VCO or only at a
certain setting?

You are playing a quite high tone. So it is difficult to judge the fault
by ear.
Please do the example once again with VCO settings at 16' and playing
then second C (counted from the low notes)

Also it will be helpful if you can turn the Cutoff up and down once
while playing the note.
Do the test with high filter resonance and low filter resonance.

Also, it seems that on voice one, we hear a note that is one octave
below the other voices.  I wonder if the sub osc could be on for that one?
Do you have access to an oscilloscope?

Bob

Unfortunately I don't have a scope but I will try and find those on the schematics

The problem does appear on all waveforms. I will rerecord with different settings and in different octaves to help give you guys a better idea. I have some decent experience with electronics and am willing to get my hands dirty. Unfortunately I don't have an oscilloscope or access to one (unless there is a cheap one online or something.)

Really appreciate the help here. Should have hopped on this forum a long time ago.

If you can spare $25, then you have a scope. Look for DSO138 on eBay. It's DIY kit, all parts included. Works good for audio frequencies.
