polysix detune

2015-02-18 by valedian@yahoo.com

Hello Polysix communty

Im in france, sorry for my poor english

I have a polysix with strange trouble.
All the polysix work now except it is impossible to tune it correctly.
The polysix is too low, 3 1/2 tones to low.
It is not possible to correct this trouble with Trims (VR1,VR2,VR3,VR14,VR15).
I change IC17,IC31,IC39,IC18,IC30,IC19, all capacitors in the master tune area,
check all resistors in master tune area. I change too Q12, and I check to
replace PC1 with Vtl5C9. The trouble keep in place....
It is difficult to understand the master tune in the shematic, very complex and
the quality of shematic in this place is confused.
All DC voltages are OK, the pitch bend sems OK , alls controls are OK and the
sound is good, just too low.
If I do a measure with oscilloscope on pin 7 of IC18 I read a rail to rail (sort
of square signal bewteen -15V to +15V). I know this is not normal, I should be
read a dc voltage, not a sort of square voltage.
Can you help me, have you an idea ?
I can do some measure at differents tests points If you wants to know more.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english.

Best regards
Franc

I uploaded a clean schematic of the antilog circuit to the files section.Did you look at it? Also, I uploaded instructions on how to adjust the antilog circuit.Even if you don't like my method, you can still use the information there to check the operation of that circuit. It should convert a linear voltage coming from the DAC to one where the voltage for each octave doubles. If that circuit is not working properly, the oscillators won't tune. Bob

Are the oscillators in tune in themselves and amongst each other and only the whole instrument too low?

Then check the +/- 5V on KLM-369/VR2 (the overall TUNE knob). If this is OK you might want to change R18 on KLM-369 to a lower value, e.g. 470K Ohm, to give it a wider range.

Good luck!

Johannes

Hi Bob,

Firstly thank you for sharing all this insightful information about the Polysix!

After several unsuccessful attempts to tune the voices of my Polysix using following the service manual, I stumbled across you directions on how to adjust the anti log circuit, I was hopeful it was the answer to why I was having so much difficulty tuning my P6 but have been unable to complete the procedure.

When measuring the voltage at R147 and adjusting VR2, I'm getting a bottom reading of 3.2656 (completely counter clockwise) and a top reading of 3.3318 (completely clockwise). Therefore I adjusted to a centre point of 3.2987 V

I'm am stuck because I cannot adjust VR3 to reach my lowest value (0.4123), it is out of the range of the trimmer. It maxes out at about 0.25. I tried adjusting VR2 to completely counter clockwise but still that value divided by 8 is out of range for VR3. I hope that makes sense.

Any advice on how to further troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

One last bit of information I tested pin 7 of IC18 and it gave a reading of -3.2 which I believe is normal.

Cheers,
Jay
