just got a junker...

just got a junker...

2014-10-11 by ftyjytjdrtjy@yahoo.com

just got a rather bad shape poly 6 for $100.

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/attachments/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/423623d1412877179-battery-rot-poly-6-img_1959.jpg

1.  powers up.
2.  some keys sound.
3.  battery has not rotted.
4.  makes one sound and no pots work.
5.  all switches work/light up.

Insides look great, rear is SMASHED but intact.
Volume pot is shot, (need to press down on it to make it work)

Questions:

FACT:  I am unskilled at soldering past a high school level.

My thought was to order a factory battery because I cant jumper diodes and voltages on the charging mod on the coin slot lithium battery mod.

My thoughts were to attempt fixezs on the basic level.

If I cant get it working perfect then start desoldering the chips and sell them after I test they work.

I would consider selling the unit now to someone who has the
skills to repair it.    You got a good price and should be able
to make a quick profit.  I guess the main issue would be the "smashed"
rear panel.   I would not put a rechargeble battery in a PolySix.
the Lithium battery mod works well and is a cheaper and safer option.

Contrary to what you say the battery clearly has already leaked, just not
as bad as with many other cases.
The greenish residue around the vias and IC31 legs is a clear sign, so are
the dark spots on the large trace near the battery.

You should remove the battery at once and give the board a thorough
cleaning. Perhaps the board still can be saved.

that battery defintly has leaked...see those black spots everywhere.....

ps i have a frontpanel for the P6 overhere if your interested...does have some small corrosion but it isnt smashed

and desoldering the chips without damaging them or the board is near to impossible...just cut out the cmos one desolder pin for pin without damaging the board any further....but you said you are NOT skilled...well i am and these machines are a pain i n the ass if you dont know what you are doing....wish i had picked that one up

ps basic level? basic level is that the machine works...nobody will buy a half working P6 which has already been messed with by an unskilled person....

how much do you want for it? im offering you 200

If it was me I would have bought a brand new assembled Kiwisix to replace the damaged pcb + add new features as a bonus. There is a Kiwisix guide that seems to explain most work, but still you need some skill and there will probably be trouble down the road to deal with...

/Fredrik

I concur that the battery has already leaked.   You can see a number of discolored vias,
along with corrosion on the diode and resistor in the photo.    (But my board was much worse.)
You should remove the battery ASAP.

Troubleshooting a processor-based synth without an oscilloscope is very time-consuming,
since you can't see what you need to see.  And you will need good soldering skills to avoid
lifting traces/damaging the ICs if you try to remove them.   The preferred way to remove an IC
without damaging the board is to cut all of the leads first, then take them out one at a time.   Taking
off a chip that you want to save is a lot harder.

Maybe if you upload some decent photos of the unit we can have a little auction right here...
(I guess you would have to put them somewhere else and provide a link)

Where is the synth located?

My recommendations:
a. you need to completely take the keyboard apart and clean it. No soldering required, just screwdrivers, patience and time.
b. swap out the battery-infected board with the kiwisix. The battery has inflicted damage even if it is not clearly visibly to you.
