Connectors for keybed on KLM-366

Connectors for keybed on KLM-366

2013-01-28 by chipaudette

Hi All,

I'm starting down a long road to add aftertouch and velocity response to my PolySix. My plan is for the aftertouch to mirror the effect of the mod wheel...that should be pretty straight forward. My plan for the velocity is to affect the EG amount on the filter, which will take a whole lot more surgery (and sync'ing with the multiplexed CV signals).

To get started, though, I simply want to connect my new Fatar keybed (with velocity and aftertouch) to the existing keybed connectors on KLM-366. Yes, I'll just be getting note information (not the velocity or aftertouch), but it's a place to get started. I think that this is the same spot that many of the Polysix MIDI kits attach.

Does anyone have a part # for the connector that I need to buy to mate to the keyboard headers that are on KLM-366? If I knew those part numbers, it would really make my life easier, because then I could easily switch between the new keybed and the old keybed. I'm in the US, so vendors like Digikey, Mouser, Newark are preferred, but I'm happy to buy internationally, if that's what it takes.

Thanks!

Chip

I searched the world for these connectors and couldn't find any. If you
do find some please let me know.

I've built 3 of the KLM-376 boards and the "locking " versions of those connectors arent around any more. You need to buy non-locking and the pins plus crimper. Try Mouser or Digikey or Newark

Hi, thanks for the heads-up about the lack of availability of the locking connector. You spoke of searching for the non-locking version. I'm certainly familiar with Digikey and Mouser, but I'm lacking basic knowledge about these connectors and, as we all know, there are really too many options on Digikey to browse effectively. What are the keywords or parameters that would get me started with the search?

Based on your message, I tried "crimp connector" followed by guess that I want "Rectangular Connectors - Housings", though I'm not too sure about that. Filtering on "1 row" and "female" gets me down to 25 choices.

http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?FV=fff40016%2Cfff802fc%2C1600020%2C1680001&k=crimp+connector&vendor=0&mnonly=0&newproducts=0&ptm=0&fid=0&quantity=0&PV512=15&stock=1

At this point, I guess I need to know the pin pitch (0.1"?). Is there anything else that I should know?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chip

If you look at the parts list on my website I suggest using breakaway
headers. I don't remember the pitch off the top of my head. If you google
klm-367 replacement my site is the 4th result or so.

Re: Connectors for keybed on KLM-366

2013-01-30 by chipaudette

Hi Jed,

That's a pretty nice parts list. But, unless I'm missing something, it appears to be silent on describing the connectors. I went to this page...

https://sites.google.com/site/jedjorgensen/klm367a/parts

and I looked at both spreadsheets. Neither suggests a part number, or even additional keywords that I could use to help narrow my search.

In your message, you did mention "breakaway headers", but I'm not sure what this means in this context. I looked it up on digikey and only got male parts. Since I'm looking to make a new wire harness to plug into the KLM-367, I'm pretty sure that I need the female side of the connector.

Again, while I do have experience buying components, I have almost no experience buying connectors. So, it's possible that I'm missing something basic (like maybe all connectors fit with each other? that seems unlikely). Am I making this harder than it needs to be?

Thanks,

Chip

Your right...sorry about that. I believe what I used in one circumstance
were these molex connectors:
