Dead Polysix: No sound on my P6 (nothing, not even hiss)!!! Help!

Dead Polysix: No sound on my P6 (nothing, not even hiss)!!! Help!

2012-10-07 by pakofeber

Hi there!
I recently purchased a P6 with the infamous battery leakage problem.
I got another 367 board and have been messing around with both boards, swapping some components to find out why the effects didn't work.
But this is not my biggest problem. The thing is that yesterday, after installing one of the 367 boards, the synth made a strange noise and since then, it doesn't produce any sound (not evan the typical hiss in such an old machine).
The voices board and the whole synth itself (knobs, functions, etc.) seem to work properly, but it doesn't deliver any sound (neither through output nor phones connections)... It behaves just the same no matter what 367 board is installed.
Would any of the connectors/cables be culprit?
I need the synth to finish a recording!
Any help would be appreciated...
Kindest regards from the sunny Spain.
Pako.

When I picked up my PolySix it made no noise either, but appeared to function just fine in terms of buttons, nobs, etc. I noticed when I cranked the headphones up to full volume that some knob tweaks would alter the hiss but I couldn't get any notes to create sound.

So I kept messing around with settings and hitting random keys until I finally started going through the keys one by one, pushing with extra pressure. When I finally landed on a key that made contact I just about blew out my ear drums.

As it turns out every single key contact was shot. The one that was making contact would only do so if I mashed the key to the point it was about to break.

I tried taking apart the keybed and using a pencil eraser to clean the little gold contacts. And that did the trick...for about a week. I finally bought a key contact replacement from this site: http://www.sounddoctorin.com/

I haven't had a problem since. Just something to think about :)

I've had the exact same thing happen to me mine. (that I was given for free :D It was "dead". )
Did the exact same thing to solve it :) (self-adhesive carbon things from sounddoctorin)
Works fine now, plus I installed CHD MIDI :)

If the P6 had any way of controlling it externally you could try to trigger it that way.
However, since it's liberated from any such usefulness, you should try cleaning some key contacts and check if that helps.

Pako, if key contacts aren't your issue, then start by checking whether or
not your power supply is outputting the voltages it should with a
multimeter. Report back.

Thanks for your help, guys!
I think the key contact are not the problem, since I cleaned them before and worked perfectly...
The power supply could be the reason... Who knows! I'll try to find someone to check it for me (I don't have a multimeter).
The thing is that the P6 worked perfectly (but effects) before it stopped delivering any sound...
I'll tell you all about any progress...
Best regards,
Pako.

Yeah, I mean really it could be a lot of things, but since it's affecting
everything, and not just one voice or one vcf, etc., a good place to start
looking for problems that will affect the entire synth is the power supply.
It all starts there . . .

Good luck and feel free to post more information about the problem as you
find out more.
