Tuning problem

Tuning problem

2012-04-30 by klosmon

Hello-
I'm working on an older version voice board (with the 396 add-on board)
that won't tune.
The six oscillators can be tuned to match at the low points & high
points, but there's no way to tune them to play anything like a
half-tone scale.

I've tried the usual (replace the optoisolator, replace the 4051,
replace the dual transistor, replace the TL071 opamp), but nothing helps.

Any ideas where else I should be looking?

Thanks.

Hi,

Probably some issues in the anti-log circuit. To verify note the voltages at
IC31 pin 3. Try a C in each octave. This voltage should ramp up in a linear
fashion as the frequency increases. If not try replacing IC30 (you have
replaced IC31 already, right?). Also take a look at IC19. The A side of it
is a precise voltage reference (output should be 9V). If this is wrong you
might be in trouble. Also make sure that if you replaced Q12 that the new
device is a matched pair and thermally bonded. Two BC549s glued together
just won¹t cut it, but you probably know that!

Cheers,
Andy

Hola-
Replaced some CMOS with no result, finally had success with a new 4558
at IC19.
Thanks for the help -- this didn't used to be so difficult, but with 4
to 6 repairs going at once (and more on the way), it's difficult to
focus like I'm supposed to.
Looking forward to a break soon....

Thanks again.

Polysix tact switch.

Does anyone know the model of tact switch used in the polysix and poly 61?

I'm guessing a C&K switch, but a mouser part number would be great.

(I'm referring to the tact switch under the special switch cap)

Kind regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

I believe the OMRON B3F 4000 are perfect for the job...

Mouser 653-B3F-4000

Best wishes,
Tony

Tony,

Thanks very much from me too for this information - I've been looking for a Mouser/Digikey/Farnell part number for these switches for a while now.

I'll be sure to post this information as a video in my YouTube channel Polysix rebuilding playlist once the parts arrive and I can compare them with the originals.

Cheers,

Cool Syntegrator,

I found your series on the Juno really helpful.

That's only about 20x as expensive as mouser!

An update here for everyone...

I did some correlating with the infamous Murray over at kiwitechnics.com (the company that is currently working on the Kiwisix upgrade for Korg Polysix) - He agrees this part number will work, BUT he recommends the 'Long Service Life' version instead of the standard one.

Part number is nearly identical: It's a 5000 instead of a 4000:

Mouser 653-B3F-5000

In terms of cost the long service life version is 55 cents each (when ordering 25) instead of 45 cents. I can spare $2.50 for the extra peace of mind that 10 years along it won't need replacing... ;-)

Cheers!

Poly 61 uses different switches, with square thingies peeking out, and
the plastic Korg key is pushed on it. The part name is Omron B3F-5050,
but the square is tiny bit too wide for the cap so it needs to be filed.
Poly 6 uses flat switches, so B3F-5000.

Hey everyone,.

I've made and posted a few videos to the Syntegrator channel on this topic now that the parts arrived:

Re: [PolySix] Tuning problem

Just to make sure before thinking further:

You're holding a note and then turn off the Chorus: The pitch of the held
note changes.
You're holding a note and changing the modulation level: The pitch of the
held note changes.

Is that correct?

I think that some tuning weirdness can happen if the optocoupler is bad - I would check that. The KiwiSix manual describes how a bad optocoupler would behave.
