I've found that the arpeggiator is probably the single most fantastic thing on the PolySix. It makes me feel like I've joined Tangerine Dream! My question is about triggering it externally. Will I be able to trigger it from a drum machine (actually a Roland MC-303) with a midi- CV converter? Has anybody tried this?

I LOVE the arpeggiator too:) Frank

Has anybody tried this? well, I trigger mine with my TR-707. the 707 has a "trigger-out" on the clap I think. (one of the sounds anyways). maybe the 505 has a similar function? Does it have individual outs, or perhaps an assignable output? You could assign a sound to that output, and just run a wire 1/4"M to 1/8"M and just plug them together. no midi-cv or anything. try it out. -ben -- _______________________________________________ Get your free email from http://www.graffiti.net Powered by Outblaze

If I recall correctly (haven't done this in quite a while): I had to set the Kenton Pro2000 MIDI-CV converter to do -5V to 0V S-trig in order for it to trigger the arp. ...kl... * Ken Leonard - Web Table of Contents: http://www.kleonard.com * Get Outdoors New England: http://www.GONewEngland.org ** GONewEngland is a neat, fun, and free Internet Bulletin Board ** for outdoor activities in/around the New England area--and beyond!

If you don't have a MIDI-CV convertor that outputs a clock, then you may may be interested in the link below. I found it while browsing the other day. They have a range of boxes that generate clock outputs from MIDI, one specially for the PolySix. I haven't tried one, so can't comment on how well they work. http://www.dinsync.com/ cheers, Andy.

Nice link, but I couldnt find any purchase information for the box at all. I might have mis understood how it works, but would it be possible to trigger the arpeggiator from a sound card, if you feed it a signal, say from a sequencer click track, at the right resolution? Has anyone got any ideas which resolution (ppqn) the Poly Six arpeggiator trigger in works at ? If anyone has an old drum machine with a trigger out, then perhaps they could analyse the signal? the arp in the p6 isn't and doesn't have any sort of sequencer in it therefore (as far as I'm concerned) it doesn't need *any* sort of clock signal. when it gets a signal, it steps to the next note in sequence (up/down/updown). Give the trigger in an electric signal, and it will step. The manual states whether it is a going low voltage or a going high voltage. take the output of any of your keyboards or drum machines and plug it in there. now hit a key. nothing? crank up the volume and try again. try a kick drum sound, try a snare, try a stick click or something. if *nothing* works, you might have to make a special cable that reverses the polarity. actually, a regular clock signal would probably just make the arp step really fast. if I'm wrong, somebody will probably step up to the podium and set the facts straight.. we'll see.... .sig -Chromatest J. It works at one pulse per note, what you need to do is low pass filter a sound
from a drum
machine or other source so it ends up looking like a single pulse, then maybe
feed that into
a scmidt trigger to clean it up a bit and feed that to the arp input.
I built a box to do this sort of thing years ago and it's stil the heart of my
rig.
I'll see if I can dig out the schematics sometime... though it was all a bit
made up as
I went along.
Otherwise just try feeding in a nice clean kick drum sound or simiilar from the
headphone
outputs of the sound card, experiment with the tone controls on the sound card
of you have them
and you may find it triggers OK, expect messy multiple triggers for a while
until you
find the right settings though... also feed the signal through a big ish
capacitor in series to
prevent any DC coupling from blowing up either the soundcard or arp input.
Hmm I feel I aught to put in a big disclaimer here.. I have not tried conencting
a pc
soundcard directly to a polysix! try this at your own risk!
You might want to look at envelope follower schematics for ideas too.. they do
the same sort of thing, i.e. turn notes into pulses.
Cheers,
Robin.
