I have a polysix with the last 2 voices defective (voice# 5&6) The defective voices makes a distorted, metallic type sound. The other 4 voices and all the functions are working ok. Has anyone experienced this problem before? Which board would causing this problem?

Well, a nice easy one to try would be a swap the EG chip (IC34) from a working voice and then the filter chip from (IC34) to see if the voice quality improves. Try that to start with and see how you get on... Thanks for the reply. I have swapped over both the SSM2044 (IC32) and SMM2056 (IC34)from a working voice and the problem still exists. Tried it on both faulty voices. I had a similar problem, also on voices 5 and 6. I thought maybe it was a problem with IC38 or C55, C56 or something in that area since the problem got worse if I touched anything there. The heat from a finger on IC38 or C55 would send the oscillator soaring in frequency with some harsh overtones. The other four voices didn't react this way. There was a lot of dirt and gunk on that corner of the board so I sprayed it with deoxit until it was running off the edges. I did a lot of cleaning and then tried it again. It was worse than ever. I think it took several hours for all the deoxit to completely evaporate from under the chips before it started to sound right again. I should have had a can of air to blow out under the chips. Anyway, after a couple of thorough cleanings like this and many hours of drying time, I think the problem is gone. It definitely got worse before it got better. Maybe the cooling effect of evaporating deoxit messed up the calibration and it had to get back to room temperature to work right. Don B. _____

Here is the thread I was looking for. I still have slight problems on voices 5 and 6. Thanks to the suggestion from Chromatest to use a toothbrush with the deoxit. It has worked fairly well. I don't hear any distortion on 5 and 6 but they do take a bit longer to warm up and get in tune. Maybe 10 minutes. That's quite an improvment from 30 minutes. Too bad Deoxit has no abrasives in it. I might have to try Crest or Colgate. Has synth.junkie seen any improvements with voices 5 and 6? Don B. _____
