New Boards for Old?

New Boards for Old?

2010-02-22 by y964omw

Hi,

Just wondered how many of you out there who aren't electronics techs or don't have access to one would be interested in an exchange service for their old KLM-367s. Haven't finalised the details yet, if at all, but if there is any real interest I will certainly offer the service. Basically you send me your old board and I will build and calibrate you a new one by return of post. Any impossible to find parts will be salvaged from the old board, but the majority of the construction will be brand new. As one of the protagonists of the new 367 I thought I would be in a good position to help out the community, if required.

Let me know what you think...

Cheers,
Andy

That sounds like an awesome idea Andy. Count me as one.
Thanks,

I might be interested, depending on cost. Can you tell us anything about what you might charge?

Re: New Boards for Old?

Hello Andy,

I would be interested in your proposal. I'm a absolute beginner in electronics and I'm affraid the 367 clone project is a too high challenge for someone like me.

The ideal would be to get an answer from you few days before the group buy ends (march 17th).

Re: [PolySix] Re: New Boards for Old?

2010-03-01 by Andrew Jury

Hi,

Thanks all the interest in the new boards for old scheme. Here is what I
propose I if you¹d like to have one of the new boards hand crafted for you:

Go grab a new board from the Group Buy sale before it ends. Make contact
with me and then send me both the new board and your old KLM-367. I will
then order all the parts for you, assemble, test and return the new unit to
you for 150USD or whatever that is in your local currency (about 50 pence
where I live). I¹ll sort everything out and all you need to do is fit the
new board in your P6! Not looking to make money on this venture. Just
offering to help those out who have no one else to ask for help. See, there
are a few nice people left. The reason for taking your old board is so that
the impossible to find parts can be transplanted, edge connectors, Mask ROM,
etc. You can have it back minus the stripped parts if you like.

If you are interested please let me know. Oh and BTW, I am going to setting
up a skeleton support service for the new boards so there is at least
someone to ask if you are self assembling and need to refer. More to follow
soon...

Cheers,
Andy

Hello Andy,

I can't express how grateful I am. I own a broken P6 for 4 years now and without your commitment it would have remained silent forever...

As you just said "there are few nice people left" and you're undoubtedly one of them.

You wrote in your first message that you're one of the "protagonists of the new 367". Do you mean you got involved in designing or testing the prototypes ?

Re: [PolySix] Re: New Boards for Old?

2010-03-02 by Jed Jorgensen

To be clear: Andy is largely, if not entirely, responsible for the fact that
we have moved from a prototype to a ready-to-solder board. He has the brains
and electrical engineering experience to make it happen.

I provided the blunt force of funding to get a design moving forward.

;)

Yeah, I can vouch for Andy. He repaired my 367 board that had numerous
issues last year and he really knows what he's doing. And he's totally
honest and friendly on top of that. I couldn't thank him enough for the
quality work he provided. I choose his services based off of other
recommendations on this board from others stating the same thing. You can
count on him to do the job right.

Re: New Boards for Old?

It reminds me of the "hidden" message on the SCI Drumtraks :

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/29/101715368_4b63e48852.jpg

I really wish that both of you Andy and Jed could write a handwritten message on my PCB so my P6 keeps the memory of your noble-minded and inspiring enterprise.

Re: [PolySix] Re: New Boards for Old?

2010-03-03 by Andrew Jury

Ah yes, just like they used to put cryptic messages in the gaps between the
run out grooves of vinyl records! I think Jed might have put his initials on
the artwork somewhere already. But of course the real thanks go to Yasuhiko
Mori who invented the electronics in the P6 in the first place. Without him
you¹d be tinkering with dodgy Œradio¹ buttons, horrible key contact problems
and proprietary voice chips in your Roland Juno 6 (probably)!

Cheers,
Andy

Re: [PolySix] Re: New Boards for Old?

2010-03-03 by Andrew Jury

Ah, but it is a team effort this one. What originally happened was a few
years back a chap calling himself the ŒOld Crow¹ came up with a replacement
design which was distributed to a few people. He then just vanished off the
face of the planet and took the Gerber files with him. These files are what
the PCB fabricators use to etch the boards). Personally I think he may have
been abducted by aliens, but if you are still on Earth we¹d love to hear
from you.

HyperJed or just Jed to his family and friends decided put forward a new
design, based on the old one, which had to be redrawn by the draughtsman
from scratch. I then worked on debugging the new board and getting a
finished product which actually works. No mean feat as there we some real
design Œhowlers¹ on the prototype. So now you know...

Cheers,
Andy

What if Oldcrow's disappearance was caused by a JunoSix'ers conspiracy ?
It could mean that now both Jed and you are in GREAT danger !

I also can tell you all that Andy has wonderful and complete skiils with a soldering iron and a circuit board. He's been working on most all the boards in my dear old girl in the last year and he rocks. Totally a giving and great guy with the knowledge to back up all his work 10 fold. Looks like you're going to be busy for a while Andy!

Yes, well I am sure it is part of a New World Order conspiracy! ...and I am
very scared! Just on a serious note, and I know it is off topic, does anyone
know of a good Roland Juno 6/60 message board/forum out there. Had a bit of
a search and nothing yields. Anyone own one of these beasts and fancy
setting one up with me?! I still think the Polysix has it on balance,
though!

Ahh, but it's apples and oranges:

the Polysix has the wonderful VCO's, analog EGs and richer effects, but the terrible keyboard and the suicidal battery.

the Juno6/60 has DCOs (still fine, though not the same) but a more robust keyboard, a battery that lasts 20+ years (I know I should change it but it's still working!)

as far as proprietary voice chips, both the 2044 and the IR3109 are both available on ebay.

now the Juno106, however, has at least two achilles heels: the 80017a and those tact switches.

The 106's 80017a chips are troublesome indeed, but I picked up a complete set of new tact switches for twenty bucks US and after an evening with a soldering iron it's like a new synth. I'd rather deal with that than the damage from a post-leak P6 battery.

And since I haven't said it yet, kudos to all involved with this board replacement and the kind souls responsible for the parts lists and offers of technical assistance. This board is a great resource! I feel like I'm missing out, because I'm one of the lucky ones: I found a P6 that hasn't been corroded a previous owner had replaced the battery long before any issues popped up. Maybe I should buy a board anyway and build a custom P6 or something? :)

So this board could be used to replace the one that gets battery damage?

I could use some of the componets in present board?

Absolutely! In fact you are probably going to have salvage some parts as
some of them are pretty scarce to say the least! Not having any further
track corrosion is the main benefit! Go stick you name down in the group
buy!
