Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

2009-06-12 by hyperjed

Hi all,

A solution is coming. But like all good things, it takes time to be done right.

Using the Old Crow gifs, and cross checking with the work that Radek has done, new Gerber files for the PCB have been created.

Andy, myself, and my PCB designer are all checking things and building out a bill of materials / parts list for this new board.

The board will be a KLM-367a drop-in replacement. It will not have any updates for midi. Midi is available from other commercial sources. This board is to get your PolySix up and running.

Once the parts list is complete and we have finished checking the gerbers, we will make some prototypes of this new board for testing purposes.

Assuming testing goes well, we will put out a call for all those who want to buy one or more PCBs. There may also be an option for complete and tested boards. (This is still under discussion.)

In the meantime, please try to be patient and we work through this process.

I will try to post updates as we move along so folks know where things are at.

All the best,

Jed Jorgensen

Wonderful! Thank you very much. I'll buy some boards when they are
ready.

Re: Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

2009-07-27 by hyperjed

Hi everyone,

Here's a quick update on the new KLM367 PCB project:

On Friday I sent off newly created gerber files to get a couple prototype boards fabricated. I should get the prototypes back around August 5th.

Andrew Jury has been working on a new parts lists. We're just about done sourcing some of the hard-to-find components. Once the prototypes come in, Andy and I will each build one and test the circuit. We may need to make some modifications depending on how things go.

Because of this necessary testing, and potential revisions, I don't have a firm date on when we'll have something to offer folks -- only that we are still working, but things are coming along.

The process of creating a new bill of materials has been useful in thinking through what exactly we are going to offer. At this point, it seems most likely that there will be three product offerings:

1) A bare PCB (we'll also provide the Bill of Materials for you to order components)

2) An "exchange-repair" where we take some of the expensive and hard-to-find parts off an old board (assuming they are still usable) and put them on a new board

3) A complete replacement with all new components

Andy will likely offer the complete replacement and the "exchange-repair" option, while I'll offer just the bare PCBs. I can't yet give a firm quote on what these various options will cost, but I can *speculate* that the *bare boards* will cost somewhere around $25 each depending on how many we end up making. The other options will be more expensive.

To start nailing down quantities and costs, and to understand how many people will be interested in each option, I've created a "KLM367 Pre-Orders" database here on the PolySix group site.

If you think you are going to want to be part of this offer, please click on the "Database" link from the PolySix group home page, click on the pre-orders database, and click "Add Record" to add your information. I've asked for what country you are in so I can think about shipping costs too. This is NOT a binding commitment since I can't tell you how much things will cost at this point (but we are trying to keep costs as low as possible).

Thanks for the continuing interest in this project. I'm looking forward to being able to share more good news soon.

Best,

Jed Jorgensen

Jed,

Make it 4 boards for me.. I will not really interested in parts list as I usually just repair P6s and would have the parts minus any damaged peices.

Do you know Chris Rize? I am looking at finishing a repair job on his P6 and I will most likly aquire another for repair to readd to my studio. Like I said when I return to pdx in Feb I will help in any fashion you may need. I am also interested in pooling folks together to start a Modular Synth Club for bulk buys and development.

Re: Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

Hi all,

Here's another quick update on the KLM-367 project.

The prototype PCBs and all the parts came in last week and the beginning of this week. One of the prototypes is now on its way across the ocean to Andy so he can test it as well.

The only thing holding me back now is finding time to solder! I hope to be able get started tonight, but given the size of the board and my limited time in the evenings I don't expect to finish up mine until next weekend (~ Aug. 23). Once the prototypes are assembled and tested we'll know if we need to make any changes before moving on to a production run. I'm hopeful that any changes will be minimal.

Folks who are planning on building up a board from scratch (as I am) should be aware that the parts costs are higher than I would have guessed -- I've spent approximately $100, not including the cost of the board. So fair warning.

I'll post another update (and maybe some photos if I've got the time) as the assembly and testing moves along.

Best regards,

Jed

What happened to your old board? I would think most people would be getting most of the parts from their old KLM-367s... The battery leakage usually just kills a couple ICs...

The damage was very expensive on mine. Some things certainly are salvageable, but not much. And the time investment in desoldering might easily justify the new parts.

RE: [PolySix] Re: Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

If you are serious about deploying this replacement KLM-367 then you should
only consider the most obscure parts for salvage. We are talking mask ROM,
wire to PCB connectors, thermistor, long-tail pair bipolar, etc. This board
is approaching it's 30th anniversary in some cases and it will be slightly
remiss not to change the ageing silicon and passives with commonly
available, off-the-shelf replacements, where possible. (Some of these have
lives much shorter than 30 years!) I understand that a full BOM for use with
Farnell and Mouser with be made available where most of the these components
can be bought.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi all,

We are still working on this. Troubleshooting has taken a lot longer than
expected and we're still working out a few bugs. Andy has been fantastic
help in figuring out what the problems are. Once we finish that (I hesitate
to provide an estimate as to when since I've been so far off up until now)
we will get a final count and do a run of the boards.

Given the general level of interest, I'm guessing we're talking about a
fairly small production run. Somewhere between 30-50 PCBs total, unless a
bunch of people show up wanting one all of a sudden. At that scale, the cost
is likely to be a bit higher than I was hoping. We're probably looking at a
PCB somewhere in the $30 range, plus shipping.

Best regards,

Jed

Count me in for a new KLM367 too! I just powered up my P6, having not
played it for a few months, and the rather extensive repair I did to the
KLM367 is failing already. I must have missed something, because the
lithium battery is completely drained, the preset sounds are gone, and
the preset LEDs are acting erratically again. It works fine in manual
mode, but any attempt to load the factory sounds causes the P6 to
crash. It was working 100% a few months ago.

I think new boards are the only long term solution.

I fixed up my damaged board and it's been fine. It does depend on how extensive the damage was I guess and it's very easy to overlook, or create 'new' problems that will show after some time. I'd re-check my repaird and rule that out as if you repaired it 100% once there's no reason it can't be again? (aside from failing components which are a seperate issue and would need checking even with a new board)

Jed,

I am still interested in buying a few off you. I will be returning to Portland in February so if the project is still held up I can see what I can do to help or at least buy a beer/coffee ;)

HI,

I would be interested in two or three of the pcb's should you make them.

  Jed,

I am still interested in buying a few off you. I will be returning to Portland in February so if the project is still held up I can see what I can do to help or at least buy a beer/coffee ;)

Re: [PolySix] Re: Update on new run of KLM-367 PCBs

2009-11-30 by Jed Jorgensen

Hi folks,

This project is still moving forward. It has taken far longer than I
anticipated.

At this point we think we have found all the errors in the initial board
layout. Andy has got his board fully running in a known working P6. I have
one issue left with mine, but at this point it is hard to tell if the error
is on my board or somewhere else in my P6 (which was not working when I
acquired it).

The next steps for us are to verify that Andy's board can be correctly
calibrated, and then to make all the changes to update the Gerber files for
a production run. I'm hopeful we will be able to accomplish this in the next
couple of months and then offer the boards for sale.

Thanks,

Jed

Any news on the new boards...? :)

And would it help if we began giving you deposits for orders?

My Polysix is currently at www.synthrepairservices.com just waiting for a new board ;)

We're almost there: http://sites.google.com/site/jedjorgensen/klm367a/images

We have a working prototype and I got the final edits to the gerber files
last week.

I'm in process getting a purchasing system set up for the above website.

I'll have more news very soon!

This is really encouraging guys. Thank you for your efforts.

I have to post a pic of the 3rd 367 I have. You'll see why I'm eager. It's easily the worst damage I've seen.
