No sound in manual mode and tape load doesn't work

No sound in manual mode and tape load doesn't work

2008-11-23 by rodm99_99

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. My polysix has been sitting for years. Recently,
I got ambitious and bought a lithium battery and holder to replace the
old leaky battery on my KLM-367 board. I also had to replace IC31.
After i replaced the battery, I noticed that I would have more than 1
bank illuminated. I took the KLM-367 out and repaired the bad traces.
Once I did, now at least I can select 1 bank at a time. Now, I can't
get the polysix to make a sound in manual mode. Also, I can't get my
data tape to also load back into the polysix. I've double checked the
traces. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Rod

Yeah, the traces are messed up.

Hi Rod,

Welcome to the forum! As our esteemed collegues have pointed out you
should re-visit the work carried out in and around IC31. Sometimes
track disconnection is not visible so you will need to do a proper
continuity test. Also check the print around the battery's old location
as it is very susceptable to damage. Make sure the top surface of the
PCB is free of spilled electrolyte and clean with IPA. If you still
have no luck then read post 1934. I know it is a shameless plug, but
help is on offer if you are at an impass!

Cheers,
Andy

I completely agree with this. When I repaired mine, there were traces
which looked as though they had plenty of copper to conduct, but
apparently the metal had corroded enough that the conductivity was
compromised. Very careful Ohmeter testing isolated the bad traces. I
wouldn't recommend a continuity buzzer for this work.

You will need to be very methodical in your approach. If you can, use a
PCB copper overlay printout, and trace out the conductivity, node by
node. Test multipoint-to-multipoint at each termination of each node,
and if there is a break in conductivity, then work your way inwards from
each termination, to isolate the compromised trace sections.

This sounds very finicky and tedious, but it is really not too bad once
you get going. I guess you would have already fixed more than 95% of the
issues, doing something very similar to what I have described. However,
with this sort of work, it is often the last 5% that requires the most
effort.

Good luck.
