Problem with Trident MK2 Signal Generator

Problem with Trident MK2 Signal Generator

2007-02-22 by Niels Ott

Hello there,

my Trident MK2 is defective.

Symptom: VCO 1 is defective for one voice.

Up to now I was able to found out: Input 1 of IC704 (4x CMOS switch) on
KLM-379 doesn't get the VCO signal on voice 7. On all others it does.

There are some oddities with op amp IC707 but I'm not yet sure. The
schematics and the circuit board design hint to the direction that IC707
"feeds" IC704.

The IC707 is a 4558, I assume that it is similar in the Polysix.

Did anybody of you experience a similar problem? What about replacing
the 4558, did this help?

Furthermore, some of the 4558s carry a date stamp of 1997 which means
they must have been replaced by an earlier owner.

Unfortunately there is no shop selling electronic parts in reach so I
can't just go for it and try replacing it. Mail order is an option but
not for a few ICs...

Thank you for commenting.

Best,

  Niels

Did you switch SSM2056 and SSM2044 between voices to see if it may
lay there ?

Hi gil,

the SSM* are OK, I checked them. I had a nice day with the oscilloscope
and found out: The output of the signal generator board is already bad.

Then I replaced two opamps 4558 which I suspected to be the problem but
it didn't help. Still 0V out instead if the signal on oszillator 2 (VCO
1 (sic)).

Next suspect was the CMOS switch which I replaced by a similar type. But
Somehow it wasn't similar enough, so I got -9V in the output now, which
is definitely not good.

I'll keep on soldering. ;-)

Best,

   Niels

Re: [PolySix] Re: Problem with Trident MK2 Signal Generator

2007-03-11 by Niels Ott

Hi gil and others,

no unfortunately not. I'm quite busy so I didn't find time for further
experiments. I got some great hints from German synthesizer gurus, though.

One of those hints said: The 4066 chips go bad whenever the voltage on
their input comes close to their supply voltage. So if you're messing
with those, put them on a socked and be sure to have replacements
available...

And some other hints, now I hope to find the time soon.

Still I'm wonderhing whether I will sell the Trident MK2 or not once I
got it fixed. I'm not a collector, I'm trying to be a musician.

Best,

   Niels

Well, what are the other hints? I'm curious...

as for the 4066, I had a few going bad on my Kawai SX210, interesting
input.

I would not sell the MK2, I like mine so much. But if you still want
to sell it I know someone in the UK who will be more than happy to
buy it from you.

Re: [PolySix] Re: Problem with Trident MK2 Signal Generator

Hi,

still no news, still very busy with University stuff.

I'll try to link the information I got with the experience I aim to get.

Selling an MK2... yeah. Maybe not a good idea. But to be honest, the
device seems not that reliable and I need something that does the job.
Still the analog sound is extraordinarily! However, it is the only
reason to keep it.

So in case I'm selling it I'll post an announcement here. BTW, I'd sell
a custom made solid case togethet with it.

Best,

  Niels

(Defective) Trident MK2 for Sale (Re: [PolySix] Problem with Trident MK2 Signal Generator)

2007-05-07 by Niels Ott

Hi again,

I found that I just don't find the time any soon to fix my Trident MK2.
Defects as described below. I won't find much time before August or even
later and I'm low of cash and my cheap studio monitors are signaling the
end of there life...

So in case anybody is interested in buying it, please make offers in \ufffd
off-list.

My offer includes:

- Korg Trident MK2 with defect named below, plus a scratch on the
wooden side. Besides that in good condition!
- Battery has been replaced
- Joystick has been replaced by other part
- 2x SSM 2044 NEW! but old stock
- 1x SSM SSM2056 used
- 2x 4066 quad CMOS switch
- 5x 4558 dual OpAmp
- Printouts of data sheets for all ICs named above.
- Printed service manual on A3 as available online
  (however, not perfect quality)
- Custom made transport case in mint condition!!!
(wooden flight case with aluminum edges)

Sooner or later I'll put it on Ebay for a fixed price but I'd be happy
to avoid this extra work and just sell to some enthusiast here on he list.

I will arrange shipping within the EU, however I need to figure out
costs. (Outside the EU is not such a good idea because of customs etc.)
Payment could be done via PayPal or bank transaction.

Best,

   Niels

Some pictures: http://www.drni.de/niels/for-sale/tridentmk2/

In case you're interested, write personal mail. Please do also give
country, city name, and postal code, this will enable me to find a
shipping company with a good price. The whole thing (Trident + Case) is
approx. 36kg which makes it more difficult.
