Power Supply......on the fritz

Power Supply......on the fritz

2007-01-07 by nowdigitaluk

Hi,

Anyone any idea what the output voltage of the transformer or voltage
accross the smoothing capacitors should be?

Thanks

Although I can't say for certain as I can check it on a polysix, the
transformer should be 4:1 so that the 120v goes to 30v; the caps are
rated at 35v which should not exceed the input voltage.

Hope that kinda guides you in the right direction.

Thanks... I measured 30V which seemed a bit high, so I thought I'd
ask.

If you think you're having power supply issues, the very first thing you should do as a matter of practice on equipment this old is to replace all of the electrolytic capacitors in the supply. Caps have gotten smaller, so I usually replace them with at least twice the voltage rating. IMHO, 35V caps are too small for a 30V supply...

While you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to replace the rest of the electrolytic caps, but I'd stick to the stock values if they are in the audio path.
