Changed battery....now no sound!

Changed battery....now no sound!

2006-10-13 by peter_vh01

Hello,

Tonight I attempted to change the battery in my korg polysix. I
followed the directions on the Resonant Frequency site
(http://www.hoohahrecords.com/resfreq/mods/polysix/battery.html), and
now when I turn on the synth, no sound comes out. All i hear is a bit
of weird static.

The only thing I can find which I did differently from the directions,
was that I bought a battery with a PCB mount attatched to it, and I
sodered this in before I installed the diode. I hardly see how this
could make a difference...

If anyone can offer me any advice, it would be MOST appreciated.

Thanks,

- Peter

Well, one obvious thing you might have overlooked --

removing the battery wipes the program memory; if you don't program in (or
reload) patches, you'll get random (or no) sound. Try putting the front
panel into "Manual" mode & see if you can get the controls to respond.

If this doesn't work, go back & check to be sure you replaced ALL the
inter-board connectors.

Hello,

The polysix was set to manual mode. I'm going to take another shot
putting it all back together again later today. Hopefully it was just
a loose connector?

Thanks for the advice,

- Peter

Re: Changed battery....now no sound!

OK, so I put the board back in again, and made sure that all the
connections were secure. Everything seems to be in the proper place,
but I still can't get any sound.

When using the main output, I get a lot of static and 'weird sounds'
when I turn the machine on or off, or switch from Manual to Patch
mode. When using the Headphone ouput, there is no 'weird static', but
it still makes odd noises when turned on or off, or when it is
switched from Patch mode to Manual.

Does anybody have any idea of where I should go from here?

Thanks,

- Peter

Have you tried creating a new sound? From your response to the previous suggestion I'm not sure you understood what they were saying. When you remove the battery you lose all sounds, putting the battery back again doesn't restore the sounds, you have to either create all new ones or load them from a cassette (or other means) again.

I switched it into manual mode, and tried flipping around the knobs,
and nothing came out. So, I don't believe that this is the issue.
(Unless I am doing something wrong?)

Thanks,

The battery stores the patches. No battery, no
patches. Pull them of the web or the orig cassette.

Re: Changed battery....now no sound!

2006-10-13 by peter_vh01

I loaded all the patches in again, and the same problems are occuring.
Just a lot of static sounds from the main output, though no static is
coming out of the headphone plug.

Again, the patches should not be the issue, as when I switch into
manual mode, I am not able to make any sounds appear.

Anybody have any clue of what I should do next?

Thanks,

- Peter

If you don't have a scope, repairs can be difficult.

However, first check to see if there's audio output from the "output" test
point on the voice board (use jumpers input into a small amp) -- if there
is, the next step in the chain is the effects board, which handles the
audio before passing it on to the output jack. Check all the connectors on
this board, including the one that connects to the CPU board (this one
carries the main volume CV).

I'm assuming you have the schematics?

Re: Changed battery....now no sound!

2006-10-14 by peter_vh01

Fixed!

Turns out it was just a stupid mistake. A plug on the voice board
wasn't hooked up...I completley missed it! Thankfully, my polysix is
now in full working order.

Thanks for the help, and I apologise for the trouble.

Re: [PolySix] Re: Changed battery....now no sound!

2006-10-14 by Niels Ott

Heh, I once ended up screaming and shouting because I made my Trident
not to work any more.

Later I found I had forgotten to plug the power support cable into the
CPU board.

Things like that happen. :)

Perhaps you switched polarity of either the battery or the diode?
Have you checked?
