Basically unless someone has already done the battery upgrade you've got a decent project in front of you. The battery originally used was a poor design and all will not just go bad but will spew acid over delicate circuits and some will need to be replaced.
The good news is that once you do this upgrade the new battery can be had at any drugstore!
