True, you can't fly a Mellotron... a little ungainly for that, but thay CAN take you for a pretty good ride tho' yes? Ask Pinder!
"He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
He'll fly his astral plane.
He'll take you trips around the bay.
He'll bring you back the same day."
Okay, they're talking about Timothy Leary, but they sure used a Mellotron to DO it! Can't ignore that last note, brass(?), turning the whole way down in pitch and sounding very airplane-flyby-like! Weeeeee! ;

I don't believe you need anything but a vivid imagination to fly the friendly skies called music!
That's what the astral plane is to me.

That's very true.

I was fortunate enough to hear Mike Pinder land that atral plane ...right in
the Baltimore Civic center.1972

Ask Frank, he was there too.

'Timothy Leary's Dead'.....great tune! I think he (or at least his product) was responsible for much of the music at that time.
I'm not complaining....most of my favorite comes from that era! :)

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Re: In Search of the Lost Mellotron

2010-08-15 by Ms. Janet Strauss

I'm sure most of you have already seen the article, this is for the benefit
of those that didn't.

Days of Future Passed

Many folks have never heard of the Mellotron, including many modern
musicians, as manufacturing of the cantankerous instrument was halted for
awhile and the number of working machines dwindled, but like so many other
pop culture artifacts, it has gained new life in the digital age.

A cult of Mellotron has developed on the Web, a new digital version of the
original keyboard was introduced recently, an independent filmmaker has
given the funky keyboard the documentary treatment, and vintage gear
collectors salivate over getting their hands on a 'tron.

"The Mellotron is still one of the most sought-after pieces of vintage
musical gear on the market," according to Frank Samagaio, author of "The
Mellotron Book."

But how did Myrtle Beach's Frech wind up babysitting a Mellotron from The
Moody Blues' collection?

"It's kind of a funny story how I ended up as the caretaker of the
Mellotron," said Frech, owner of Mental Case, a Myrtle Beach-based road case
manufacturer whose clients include a who's who of rock 'n' roll, including
Journey, Alice Cooper, Poison, Eagles, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Anthony and
The Moody Blues. "I was delivering cases to Poison in Greenville [and I met]
Mark Hogue, one of the most powerful guys in the [tour production] business.
He has worked with The Moody Blues for years. I ended up getting him as a
client and we built a bunch of cases for the last Moody Blues tour."

But what about the mythical Mellotron?

Remember "Nights in White Satin - The Trip" at now-defunct Hard Rock Park in
Myrtle Beach?

"He [Hogue] called me last year and said they had loaned a bunch of Moody
Blues memorabilia to the Hard Rock Park, and that they wanted it back before
it ended up in a pawn shop. He sent some release papers and I set it all up
thinking I was going to pick up a few guitars or something," said Frech.
"When I got there some guy at the park started wheeling this giant thing out
of a closet - it was the Mellotron. All the stuff was piled up like junk.
The guitars weren't even in cases. It blew my mind."

I don't remember any MB recordings with choirs. Am I crazy?

I was there for that show as well. I got engaged at that show... Didn't end
up getting married, though. We broke up the day before our wedding in
1973. It worked out OK, though... a few years later I met my wife. I've been
with Karen for 31 years.

Yeah, I got to see the Moodies in Pittsburgh's Civic Arena... I guess early-to-mid 70s. Fine show! (As well as Yes - MANY times, and Wakeman's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" w FULL ochestra; front band was Gary Wright "Dreamweaver!" Post Ian McD./Greg Lake King Crimson played a few times locally as well - always amazing, too!) To me, the Mellotron remains one of the most AMAZING instruments through a big, serious sound system!
Actually, I heard Timothy Leary as a guest lecturer here in L.A. many years ago. Brilliant! Loved it! Thought he was incredible! It IS true, his inadvertent "product" surely led to many of the musical journeys we've been on, whether we sampled it or not! ; Surely had its influence - and beyond that, the Mellotron surely helped us sprout wings! SO glad it's on the rebound, as well. Ya hear 'em ALL the time (Audi ads? Pretty sure those are the ones, surely others, too), and lots of people use 'em at least in the studio.

Pretty amazing (and sad, the disrespect) about the Moody Blues equipment being so carelessly piled up at the defunct Hard Rock Park! Uncased guitars? Really?!?!? Geez! But what a way to get a truly famous, magnificent Mellotron! Wow!!!
Enjoying this site! And see, flying's not so off-topic after all! We all have our ways! (-: (Btw, my sis is a pilot - I've been gliding w her in Hemet. It IS an amazing experience!)

As most of you know my passion is racing (driving a Formula One car early next month), and outside the U.S.A. the drivers are reffered to as "pilots". And I can attest driving a fast car you are defenitly "piloting", just on the ground.
I never tire of speed!

The CIA thought so too. That's why they had him fired from Harvard. He was attracting too much attention to the CIA-funded project he was working on.

I saw him once at the University of Hartford giving a talk about space colonization. Very appropriate.
