Mellotron is dark and creepy?

Mellotron is dark and creepy?

2010-03-23 by Mark Pring

Just had this comment posted on my youtube site regarding a short piece posted there:

"mellotron is a dark creepy instrument. sounds like dead bodies are about to pop out the floor"

A good description of the piece, but a bit hard on the tron although I can't think of any really happy cheerful mellotron music offhand.

To me it sounds exactly like a grainy old black and white (or sepia, I guess) picture looks. Old grainy pictures are sort of creepy... So is the mellotron, but in the absolute best way possible. I love creepy things, though. That's why it has worked so well in Goblin and Morte Macabre, etc.

Mellotrons are capable of sounding incredibly creepy and incredibly
beautiful... often at the same time. I think that is why people are continually
fascinated by them. That and the fact that they are capable of expressing
great emotion as you can see by the following photo.

Cheerful, how about the begining of "Ifran Klarhet Till Klarhet"? That's up tempo.

We don't get dark & creepy until someone asks "What's a Mellotron?".

I am beginning to think that I might be! I can't "compose" anything which isn't morose and uncomfortable.

I thought I would try something without the tron and came up with this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhRk5ORXK8M

It's the sort of thing you could imagine hearing whilst recovering from some drug fuelled nightmare in a Turkish Brothel.

You must have heard about Martin's drug fuelled nightmare in a Turkish Brothel. Was that Istanbul, Constantinople or Byzantium?
