Hi everyone,

I just posted to recordings to the board. They're "A Wish in Search of an Exit," and "If you can Keep it, intro."

First one was for a 1:00 composition assignment here at Fresno State, so I pulled out an idea from years past and packaged it in a 1:00 time frame.

The second one is an introductory statement to a longer, darker, and wilder piece. It was a long process recording some 84(ish) dubs of MkII violins to get that background wash. I'm not sure if I at all like how the 1/4 speed cello sits in the mix, tell me what you think.

I had no problem playing them.  I like the 1/4 speed cello.  You didn't run tapes at that speed, Did you?  How did you pitch it down?

Well thanks all for checking it out.

Right now I'm getting this same Godawful error from Yahoo about these files, so the few of you who could listen to the files, well, Ye Gods of Random seem to smile upon you.

I'm going to ASSUME that iTunes (which I used to convert from wav to mp3 with) is as shitty of an encoder as I suspect. I'm going to try to hunt down a quality encoder for this school mac, preferably one that does more than just .mp3. I'm unfortunately on a typical college budget; I need software cheap as free. That said does anyone have any suggestions for quality encoders that are free? If not I guess it's time to start saving up money again.

When I can get these re-encoded I will tear down the current files and replace them with files that work.

Thanks for listening. To clear any confusion there might be going about: I do not own a Mellotron, nor have I ever even seen one. Very sad!

The cello is of course the M-Tron samples. I just held the note (an E) out while I was recording using Audacity. (I love that program.) I then cut the speed of playback in half twice in a row (Audacity has a change speed "effect.") I then pasted it into the mix which was a separate file and tweaked the envelope until I got something I liked at the time. (The weakness of audacity is that there are no faders or pan knobs to mess with in real time to tweak an already existing track.) I'm thinking the releases of the cello sound could have been longer, more gradual.

For "Wish" I do want something more too. I'm considering making two different takes on this idea. The first: a clarinet choir piece for our clarinet choir here at Fresno State. The second: some sort of moody and wistful "pop" (not pop but my colleagues here in the music department would call it such) tune, with fairly standard rock instrumentation and Mellotron approached in the same manner as I did here.

has it's own L.A.M.E mp3 encoder, converts to/from? most file formats, uses iTunes for AAC conversion (works flawlessly) AND has great auditioning tools, AU support, basic editing and is super cheap.? I use it all the time, everyday in fact

Those two files I had posted have been re-encoded and re-posted. For me at least they work. Hopefully they do for all of you as well. Again they are "A Wish in Search of an Exit" and "If You can Keep It, intro."
