My question is: who would actually want 10,000+ drunken idiots dialing their number every year at all times of day or night enough to pay a half million for it?

Probably that same guy who's been trying to sell the mellotron on eBay!

He says there's a DJ Company that goes with the phone number, but
doesn't list any assets. This can't be real.

At those prices, throwing in his DJ company is the least he can do!

Heck, he could even buy that high-priced mellotron and throw THAT in...

Had to google the number to see what the fuss was about but I still not sure I understand. Does he really mean that he has a bid of over $400,000? This could only happen in the USA!

Well, the auction is real if not all of the bids. The guy says that he is selling the DJ business as its the only way to get around the phone company rules that apparently forbid just selling the number. He also says "It's a little more than '80s fanatics, It's a lot of mid-size or larger corporations looking to get more brand awareness."

Any company willing to participate in this deserves to go down in flames...
